Hey Guys

I need some help with buying my first camera. I always loved taking photo but never invested in a decent camera.

I looking to buy a second hand camera to get started with just to get the feels of things and not planning on doing any photoshoots soon.

I can get the following camera for R1999.00

Fujifilm FinePix S9600

Would you consider is a good or bad buy.

Great buy, depending on how second hand it is. Any cheap DSLR is perfect for a beginner.

mouks , rather go the DSLR route and make a point of going out to take photo's. If you spend R 2000 on a camera and do not want to do photoshoots soon , why bother getting a camera ? ;-)

I still use a 40D :D

I've still got two 400D bodies that the kids use. :)

I'm loving this little EOS-M though. I keep it in the car along with a 24-70 f/2.8 and 430ex flash.

That's my next investment, EOS-M for business travel. I lugged my 1D with to Kenya last month and never again :)

I was about to comment that your plan is what I'm thinking too but to be honest I love my 1Dx way to much to leave it at home so I'll probably bring both. :)

I went to Kameraz in Rosebank today for the first time.
I picked up a Canon 20D for R2k.

Now, the thing is, I wanted a second camera, and I cannot afford to pay upwards of R20k for a new body, which invariably will do video which adds to the price (I don't need that feature).

I cannot recommend this store enough, because they sold me a 20D that, appears to have been looked after remarkably well. When push came to shove, it's taking better pictures than my 1000D, that's the first thing. The second thing is, its low light performance is awesome, for some reason it works better, far better than the 1000D which is what I had a feeling would happen.

Now I have heard the scare stories about the shutter being on its "last legs" etc... Actually this unit performs better than the 1000D, the only thing on its last legs is the battery. And that I shall replace tomorrow.

The moral of the story is, you can get into DSLR photography for cheaper than you think. When you've shot a few pro pictures and people are paying you R8k to do a shoot, then by all means, go mad, and get a R50k body and that R100k lens.

I do not do weddings/modelling/etc photography well. I shine in something quite niche- I shine in product photography, and food photography, and I get it right, without photoshop.

There is nothing wrong with a 350D. I started with a 300D which compared to a mik n druk it felt like a tank :-) The important part you got is that this camera can take a huge array of lenses and acc. So well done for getting it, I'm sure you will find it a very enjoyable piece of kit. Just please dont use someone elses gear, once the bug bites, it bites. And HARD!!!
