Camera for R6000 ?

You said f/ I read $$

:D

So you are saying that I need a lens with a shorter focal length ?

Yep. Unfortunately the larger aperture lenses are more expensive, but after you have played with one (even consider renting one for a weekend) you will be hooked. That is why I suggested the D5100 --- if you can still find one, you may be able to buy a 35 mm f/1.8 plus the body-only D5100 (although that might run slightly more than R6k?). The thing to remember is that the 18-55 mm VR kit lens is extremely cheap second hand, so buying body-only and then picking up the kit zoom second hand is a strategy you could consider.

In terms of focal length, I prefer 35 mm over 50 mm for indoor use. I guess it is down to personal preference, but I do not find that the 35 mm gives too much perspective distortion (because you will be closer to the subject than you would be with the 50 mm, for the same subject framing). The 50 mm, on the other hand, is somewhat telephoto on a crop sensor. It works well for headshots, but sometimes you cannot move back far enough (indoors) to achieve the desired framing. You could start with the kit zoom (18-55 mm), and see what focal length works well for you after a month or so of shooting. Then you can go and get the prime lens :)

A friend suggested this, basically the same thing minus the one lens.

The D3100 would be an acceptable starter DSLR, especially at that price. If you want to go into detailed sensor performance analysis, then you can find a few things to nit-pick in the D3100, but is in no way a bad choice in its price range (I would still go for a D5100 if they can still be bought).

The other lenses that you may be interested in, say, a telephoto lens like the Nikon 55-200 mm VR, can be had fairly cheaply second hand (as low as R1k), so keep that in mind when looking at some of these bundles.

Is this any good?
Canon 100D 18MP Twin DC Lens Bundle

The 100D has won numerous awards, so it is well worth considering.

As an added attraction, since the camera is marketed largely at women, Canon have a rather fetching camera bag available for it.
