Camera phone vs P&S

i will look into the 50mm f/1.8 lens (where can i get an inexpensive one?) for the home shots. thanx for the tip.
The canon 50mm f/1.8 can be bought new for under a grand. You might find some secondhand in ODP classifieds.

EDIT - R972 from SACamera

Just be aware that it is their cheapest lens in both price and build quality. It's an outstanding optical performer, just don't be surprised if it magically comes apart for no good reason despite being very well cared for.

Mine suffered a similar fate after hitting the dance floor at a corporate function - it had served me well for a number of years though. I replaced it with the f/1.4.

Speaking of babies mine should be delivered tomorrow morning - at 343mm and weighing in at 3.85kg she's a bit of a beast but I just know I'm going to love her. :D

I don't have one - that photo isn't mine :P
I've known at least four people to have theirs fall apart within its first year and one within its second year, though. Apparently the front bit you see here is held in place by some glue that eventually dries out enough that it cracks and flakes up, then the front just comes right out. You can easily repair that by just applying new glue, though.

For the back the issue is that the lens has a plastic mount and tiny screws that can also eventually come loose enough that the mount just comes off. Again, just have to reapply with some glue.

The previous model weighed more than 5kg.

Your pockets, I'll be paying them a visit sometime :D
Might ring you up if I manage to land a spot on the Agulhas II for next year's trip to Antarctica. It's unlikely that I will, but having a lens like that handy would be, well, handy ;p
Insurance and a neoprene cover for it and all, the latter which you'd get to keep!

Semi-serious, by the way. I am planning to sign up for the trip they're making next year if I can get a weather-sealed body. My uncle went yonks ago and came back with awesome photos - I wanna go too.

Point and shoot. The kid is going to be doing plenty of stuff when you're not around wiith your phone.

Even better would be a cheap secondhand dslr with a inexpensive 50mm f/1.8. You'll end up with shots you'd never dream of getting with a point and shoot.

+1
I bought a Canon S100 (ultra compact P&S with decent optics) as a carry around and a Canon 650D with 50mm f/1.8 (under R900) and 430EX II Speedlite for the more serious shots. The newborn was the perfect excuse to splash out a bit. :)
The IQ and DOF on the 50mm f/1.8 is very, very nice for portraits/baby photos even if the construction is cheap and the AF noisy.

My wife's Samsung Galaxy S III doesn't even come close to the Canon S100 P&S let alone the DSLR.
Camera phones generally have very poor or limited optical capabilities.

You haven't had experience with the ones mentioned obviously. The N8 was great. The 808 Pureview is exceptional. And your phone is ALWAYS on you.

The OP was asking if he should choose between a R750 camera or a Smartphone... Now we're reccomending R4000 cannon's:wtf:

I have the S95 but I find myself taking majority of photos with my phone...

And a N8 or Samsung S3 is going to cost less than R4000?

People keep forgetting a phone is not a single use device. If he needs a new phone then he is killing two birds with one stone. The phone is also paid off over 2 years.

I really don't get what people hate so much about the Blackberry 8520.

For the R3k+ of a new camera-phone he could be getting a really high quality compact or bridge camera instead.
Want to be able to put it online yesterday, not have to mess around with first getting to a computer etc?

The S110 has that covered. Just have to link the camera and phone via wifi to access the files and get them online.

*edit* Also, paying off the phone 'over two years' costs more for most phones than they would have done if you paid for them _now_. If you can't afford to pay the cash up-front now, then what's to say you're going to be able to pay for it over the next two years?

Exaclty, my point is that when he asked this question it was between top end smartphones and a R750 P&S... Not between high end P&S's... which is why I recommeded the phone. If it was a choice between an S95/100/110 and a phone I would choose the camera.

I always think I must be missing something when I read this sort of thing.

My SGS3 costs me R499 per month. For this I get R350 data/call value every month. So effectively I am paying a premium of R149 for the phone I chose. This ignores the 75MB free data that got thrown in with the deal. So over the two years I will have paid R3576 for the phone. I am not sure I could have got this phone anywhere for that price if I paid upfront?

And that was expensive! When I got my N8 I paid R280 per month on an Anytime 200 (inclusive of R200 use per month).

I've gone over those packages time and again to break them down into their constituents, and I've never once seen a package that was actually good value for money over buying the phone as a prepaid and then getting the equivalent package's items as prepaid.

R11976 over two years vs ~R6k for the phone right now and ~R6k to spend on whatever you need to get per month.
