Hi Guys,

Looking for someone to point me in the right direction to look for a camera.

Main reason for getting it is an overseas trip soon. I want to be able to take some decent pics.
Must be able to record video ("Vlogging"). Normally use my GoPro for this but want something that can take decent pictures too.

Budget is around 3-4k

Also is Canon vs Nikon just a personal pref thing ?

If you have to ask the yes, Canon vs Nikon is a personal thing.

There are differences though, like: Nikon's don't have low pass filters, Canon's do. It allows Nikon's to take sharper images but make them more susceptible to Moire effect (you'd have seen that on old CRT TVs...when a guy wore a bad stripy suit and the image had these funny lines...Google it )

Anyway, your budget restricts you quite a bit since you won't get a DSLR with a lense at that price (except maybe second hand). It's maybe not a bad thing because carrying around a big camera can "ruin" a day out.

One step lower in sensor size and you are looking at 1" sensor cameras. Decent ones are expensive, the G3x goes for about R12k but it is a great travel camera (image quality vs size/lens).

Then you get to the compact zoom cameras and they're only really worth it because of the zoom capabilities, else you could just use your cellphone. HOWEVER, some of them, like the Panasonic TZ70 have decent manual controls. And because they're small and "cheap" it is:

1. A camera you'll actually use
2. Not an expensive "mistake" should you not like photography

So that's what I would do - a decent compact zoom.

DISCLAIMER: I own a Nikon D5300, Canon G3x and a Panasonic TZ70

After some reading, I'm getting the opinion that DSLR would be better suited for frequent shooting? Since this is mainly for a lengthy trip I'm leaning towards mirrorless for the size and screen

That's the one yeah.

sorry, I haven't looked at SA prices at all yet.

Im currently using my Canon powershot S120 for just about everything from underwater to landscape and work inspections. It fits in my jeans pocket and just keeps going.

Meanwhile my 60D is supposed to be the decent one, but it's collecting dust while it's not northern lights season. :( Its also way too bulky for me to ever consider slugging along on trips.

Still think the mirrorless would work better. You can always replace that body with a better one later, or get a better lens later.

With the G series you are stuck with the fixed lens so if it is not the G3x I don't know what you are getting that is better than the M10 which is cheaper as well.

After a little bit more googling I'm starting to look at the G7x and G9x. Prefer the size of them and I like the screen of the G7x II

Not to mention the advantages a [much] larger sensor brings to the table.
