I wouldn't swap brands now - it would be too costly an exercise - but if I was somehow starting over, knowing what I know now it's not cut and dry.

Let's face it - the only real negative thing about Nikon is the people that shoot it. They're the BMW drivers of the camera world… :p

C'mon ... Apoc isn't that bad :D

It would interesting to hear about your experience with Canon. I moved away from them a long time ago due to a nasty firmware bug that was not resolved, but the time expiry date on holding that grudge has surely passed by now.

And I must remember to put some duct tape over the Nikon logos (to improve the grip on the cameras).

I've never actually had any problems with Canon - in fact I'm still using the first DSLR I bought even though I've upgraded countless times since then.

Funny you mention duct tape because one thing I have noticed about the D3/4 bodies my friends use is that they're forever having to get the rubber grips re-attached.

The smaller cameras do seem to have some build issues related to the bodies and switches. The duct tape trick is getting more popular for providing a durable grip area and I am also hoping that it will stop the accessory port cover from falling off for the 20th time.

I recently opened an old Canon film camera to repair it (i.e. tap repeatedly on the a frozen solenoid until it freed up). The adhesive holding the leatherette grip area down still had tack and peeled off easily. After pushing the grip area back on it stuck down and stayed. This was impressive considering the age of the camera and I wish some of the current manufacturers would take note.

Working on a budget of less than 20K for body only after all the homework i did, i kept coming back to Pentax.
The K-5, and K-3 both offer slightly better versatility and features in that price range than either the Nikon or Canon.

But where do you you even find Pentax gear these days? I just looked at ODP, Orms, and Kalahari and nothing.

And thats the catch

In C.T. i am lucky, there is Cameraworld that carry Pentax, Sigma and Tamron and i believe there is a shop in Joburg somewhere that stocks as well, while Cybertrek also carries a few overpriced items.
Although to be honest i just order from B&H +- 7-10 days delivery and even with shipping and customs duty it often works out a few thousand cheaper than buying Pentax glass locally.

There were a couple of things I was interested in ordering from B&H. Which of their shipping methods work best to here, or are they all the same?

I'm a Sony fan.

Their compact offerings are brilliant. It's the future of professional photography - people just need to wake up and get over themselves.

I'm a total noob when it comes to DSLR's. Which brand from the Top 2 will give you a sharper picture (I know it depends on the lens also.)

Could you explain more? Not trying to be sarcastic, as I need a DSLR to take pics of models.

Difficult to say really - they are both very good and you also need to tell more about your budget. bwana is much more of an expert and fvdbergh is also very knowledgeable.

EDIT: Pro photographers use both Canon and Nikon.

Really low budget I'm afraid, as I will be using the rig very seldom.
