Hi all,

We've recently had 2 incidents of crime inside our complex and was wanting to know what would be the easiest way to setup 4 outdoor cameras. I'd like to access the live feed of the cameras from my phone / computer when ever I want to (at home or away). Also night vision would be a must. Any brands I should be looking our for? I guess wireless cameras aren't recommended bcz of the amount of data they will be transmitting?

Thanks in advance!

I went to the China Mall to get an elcheapo 4ch DVR, 500Gb hard drive(not even the surveillance specific type) and 1 camera and I think it cost me R1800. The HDD can record up to a month of footage, I believe. The camera quality is terrible. My green trees look pinkish in the day but at least I can see the important things like a person standing by my gate etc. Although I wouldn't be able to identify his face - camera too far away.

My 2nd camera was from a more reputable establishment in Edenvale. I paid R699 for an 800TVL spec camera. The higher the TVL the better the picture should look. Quality is much better. Both cameras have infra-red capabilities.

My suggestion would be to try get HD cameras but my DVR can't support that so I'm stuck with analog. I still only have 2 cameras because the DIY part is a mission.
Running cables from the camera through the wall to the DVR is a pain. Then you have to put the cables in truncking to look nice and pretty. I only have a 20mm masonry drill bit and the BNC connectors don't fit through the hole in the wall. I have to cut, solder and tape up the joins. Larger diameter drill bits start from around R400 - R500.
The DVR is connected to my router via Ethernet and I had to do some port forwarding to be able to view the live-only footage over 3G. I can't view any recorded footage.

If you're a DIY type then go ahead and tackle it but I would rather get a quote from someone to do it for you and then decide. You want a brand? Look at Swann. That's some good stuff right there. Builders Warehouse has some lekker kits available.

Ubiquity UVC - IP cam that comes with POE injector.
PM me if you want to see what it looks like live :-)

I bought a cheapass system from groupon (deal not available anymore). 4 cam system without HDD for R1799. As said colours are a bit off and such but enough for my needs. Can view on phone or tablet with a app. Can view on local LAN with browser.

screenshots in thread.

Here are threads mentioning the KGuard system which seems pretty good, available from Esquire or its dealers.

I helped someone with a Dahua install the other day and was quite impressed.

Did you go the wifi route?
I am planning on getting an NVR and 1 IP camera so long as mentioned in that link.

No he already purchased the stuff, all wired to the nvr which also eliminates the need for power where the cameras are.
