Camera Upgrade

For what you getting, seems worth it, but still a bit pricey.

Thanks

If I'd dropped my 1D it would have cost a lot more . . . to repair the road surface. :p

... At 4 times the cost though?

Most people buy roughly what they can afford at the time. If you could have spent R30,000+ 18 months ago, then also not sure why you took a 550

Therein lies the rub ..I could have afforded it back then, but chose to introduce myself to semi-serious photography by buying the 550D. I am still into semi-serious photography (where semi-serious means happy-snappy shots of scenery & suchlike).
I know now that I could have introduced myself into photography just as well, if not better, by buying a full-frame camera such as the 7D.
I'm now retired and my retirement investments have taken a dip due to the fund under-performances, and as I don't know how long I still have on this mortal earth (life is SO unfair!), I'm reluctant to outlay $$$ on all the 'wants' I have, whereas I really do have all I 'need'.
But, Damn, I do want the 7D, plus better lenses than the current kit lenses!

What a load of kak. What exactly about the 550D is hampering you? And the 7D isn't full frame... ;-)

Hi Guys,

I'm quite an enthusiast, although never really spent much on gear, I've had my trusty point and shoot canon for a really long time.

Now I'd like to go for something like this:

http://camerahouseonline.com/za/canon-eos-550d-kit-18-200mm-is-replaces-500d.html

But I'm not sure, if I'm spending that much, should I rather not just go for the 7D?

If you are spending that much why not go for the Pentax k-5 ?

Couple that with 3rd party lenses like the Sigma or Tamron and you have a very nice rig.

Compare the K-5 price wise to the 7D locally and then compare the camera's here:

You can only be thinking of the 5D range in the semi-pro category. The 7D is the high shutterspeed aps-c model.

while it is often amusing to see their comparisons I've left instructions with the missus to have my head examined if I ever based a buying decision on Snapsort.

The K5 looks very nice, thanks

Wow crazy hard decision

As others have said, the 7D isn't full frame ...

So at that stage your most inexpensive full frame body would have been the 5D MKII ... being around R22,000.00 body only. Against the R8,000.00 550D it would have been a whack load more expensive. Almost like saying 'I bought 318i, but had I realised the difference I'd have bought the M3 in a heart beat' ... they're very different :P

That said when I was looking and looked at the 5D, the *only* thing I really liked was the full frame ... everything else seemed a little behind even the 7D

Completely agree with you, basing any buying decision on a review is not wise, i just find snapshot is nice and easy for quick comparisons, for more in depth i would obviously go with DxOmark or dpreview.

It is :) i opted for the optional gps unit as an extra, as it has a "startracer" utility which should allow me to explore a little bit of amateur astro-photography without having to lay out huge sums of money for a mount. (long weekend coming up and i have cottage booked outside Ceres in the mountains, so praying for clear skies to try it out )

2. ASTROTRACER for effortless astronomical photography
When mounted on the PENTAX K-5 or K-r camera body, the O-GPS1 also offers the advanced ASTROTRACER function,** which couples the unit with the camera’s SR (Shake Reduction) system and enables users to photograph celestial bodies. The unit can calculate the movement of stars, planets, and other bodies using the latitude obtained from GPS data and the camera’s alignment data (horizontal and vertical inclinations and aspect) obtained from its magnetic and acceleration sensors, then shifts the camera’s image sensor in synchronization with the movement of the objects.*** As a result, stars and other bodies are captured as solid points rather than blurry streaks, even during extended exposures.

Sample of some images in this thread taken with the o-gps1, the Op's shots are all single frame non stacked up to 160 seconds

At the end of the day choose your camera for what you want to do with it , i chose the Pentax for its price, ease of backward compatibility with older lenses from previous Pentax cameras i have owned, low noise , low light capability and added gps ability.
Believe me when i tell you that although it is a wonderful camera DO NOT expect to find many shops in S.A. who deal with Pentax camera's , lenses or even 3rd party lenses for Pentax.
The majority of shops in S.A. sadly only understand 2 words Nikon or Cannon.

If you are looking at lenses to go with your choice, i would recommend buying a magazine called What Digital Camera , they give a nice breakdown of all lenses for all makes of cameras, as well as listing 3rd party lenses that work on the major brands, such as sigma or tamron for canon, or nikon or pentax etc. Some of the 3rd party lense have higher quality ratings than original branded lenses , and often come in a lot cheaper as well if you start looking at your f2.8 range of zooms and some macro's.

The best advice i will give you is buy for your pocket firstly and secondly buy for your need or area of interest.
An average mid range camera with good lenses will work as well if not better than an up market camera with poor lenses.

The waiting is killing me

I went with the 7D, paid for it 2 days ago, now the tracker system says it's in the vehicle and will be delivered today.

I don't know how to wait, I can't wait..

It will have the 18 - 135mm lense which I think will be nice, my mother got a dslr with the 18 - 55mm & 55 - 200 package, I was not a fan so I chose something a bit more versatile.

I almost feel like praying for them to ring my door bell.

Every time I hear a car near my I get heart palpitations.

I was messing about with zoom effects, like setting a lower shutter speed and zoom in or out while taking the photo

Tried this with my sisters cat
