Went camping in the Cederberg this past weekend, and borrowed a trailer which made things so much easier. It was an old, rusty, heavy, presumably steel one.

I'm looking to get one now, but have never researched them. I would like something that offers good value, durability, off-road ability (as in gravel roads, sometimes of poor condition), and speed handling (120km - 160km/h (on occasion)).

Where are the best places to look? Are there distributors where I can buy more direct? Having looked briefly at Makro, R15,000 for a seemingly entry-level Camp Master does not seem like such good value for what one gets...

Roof racks also make sense to me. How important are they, or did they become, for you? Or did you never need them?

Please let me know anything else important, tips, tricks, etc.

Thanks!

You want to do 160km/h with a trailer? I am reporting you to Bheki Cele.

Offroad trailers are very expensive and i think R15k will get you the most basic venter. Which isn't suitable for off-roading. On most cars you can only put 100kg max on the roof so i dont know if a roof rack would work for your needs.

Best place to ask about off-road trailers is 4x4community.co.za .

Take that R15k and get ultra light backpacking camping/hiking gear. You won’t need a trailer or roof rack.

Yes, when overtaking... The old rusty one worked well!

Regarding off-road, nothing serious, just to various campsites, etc. Have updated OP to mention gravel roads, sometimes of poor condition. I'm not talking proper bundu bashing.

Already have all the equipment, just need something semi decent to transport it in.

4x4 community is the correct forum for this question.

Before you do anything make sure you check your license. Your options will be limited if you dont have an EB license.

What is the process. I miss the cut off years ago. If I went a few months earlier, I would probably also have an EB licence now.

Thanks for this. My B-licence allows me a trailer with GVM of up to 750kg. The ones at Makro all seem to be 750kg, so these are the types of trailers I'll be looking at.

I got the B but I missed it by a couple of years :)

As far as I am aware the process is you start with doing your learners again, then get an appointment and then go and do the test with a trailer with run in brakes.

OK cool. I made the mistake of buying a Jurgens XT140 and its quite heavy.

Go to 4x4community, some people even building their own trailers for "cheap". You might even go that route yourself.

Venter vs Camp Master vs?

Is Venter regarded as the better brand?

When you say - 'camping trailer' - do you mean a small Venter trailer for just chucking in all your camping equipment & paraphernalia...

Also check the Classifieds such as Facebook Marketplace.
Sometimes you can find nice barely used ones at very good prices.

Thanks for this. The first one above. I see that all of the 'entry' Venters are 13". I understand that wheel size can be important.

This Camp Master has 14" wheels as well as a roof rack of sorts? https://www.makro.co.za/hardware-au...-country-300-trailer-/p/000000000000139221_EA

Also here - https://karet.co.za/product/town-country-300/. Seems good value for 14" and a roof rack-like part?

55k and buy my jurgens XT65- allows code B towing. Tent, trailer, fridge,Powerbank setup.

15k won’t get you a camping trailer- maybe a venter trailer

Very nice, but don't think I'm quite there yet.

Any pearls of wisdom?

Hopefully I don't have to register at 4x4community after all...
