Can a phone line surge - not a storm

Two nights ago my ads went completely down - to the point that the router couldn't even read that the cord was plugged in. Telkom have repaired the line hut now the modem is just and won't even boot up. Is it possible there was some kind of surge in the line?

Yes, surges can be caused by many different things. It could just be a grounding difference between your end of the line and the other side. Or the Telkom technician might have accidentally connected it to a high voltage source.

Lightning activity is the most common cause of this problem.
2 nights ago in Gauteng there was some lightning activity and it is possible that you did too which may have caused the problem

Yes. We had a electrical meter blow out in our complex's DB box, which is right next to the internal Telkom DB box. Everyone who had a fax or ADSL unit connected had damage. Not even my surge protector stopped it.

Oh, OK...Tim said same - lightning can strike 5km down the road from you, but still travel via your cable - doesn't have to be an overhead strike..

Yes it can. I actually had this happen to me once before. Blew my router
