Hi Guys

Got feedback today that my NP200 steering rack is leaking oil.
The workshop quoted me close to 14K to replace it, but I was told by another mechanic that the item can be refurbished.

Has anyone had experience with this? If so, how effective is it to do it this way? What about pirate parts, are they just as good?

thanks
Kitty

Not an expert.

They recondition it. The question is rather how much will you be saving and how long will it last as only some of the parts will be replaced, as you mentioned, most probably also aftermarket parts, which is usually chosen to be cheap and not quality because you can't afford it. They can also use OEM spares if available, but won't be cheap either as there is still labour costs.

As per Google...
The sleeve not only restores tolerances, but also prevents the wear problem from reoccurring. In that respect, a remanufactured rack may actually be better than the original. Most rebuilders also pressure test their racks after reassembly to make certain they function correctly and do not leak.

I'm not sure on the age of your car but I had a similar problem with having to replace the steering column on my i20.

For me my car was old and everytime it went for a service I had to pay way more for the service than I should as something was stuffed.

My though process to get my car to new condition was 15k for steering column, 3k+ for a service, some paint work another 10k-15k, probably new brakes/shocks as it had been a while 5k+ and another 10-20k on whatever else they find. Almost 40-60k to drive my car for another year in new condition but still have a risk of having to spend another 15k the following year on something else.

Flogged it to webuycars for 20k less than I paid for it 8 years ago as the 2nd hand car market is broken and bought a new car.

Yes it can, leaking oil on anything means seals or gaskets are gone, you get new ones fitted and you are good to go.

You will get a much shorter warranty, or none at all.

From experience, it is not worth it AT ALL to get a recon/refurbished Steering Rack. (For other parts, yes, maybe, but not for steering racks.)

By the way, the piece quoted by @Bikerbob could perhaps be the case ... in a first-world country!

What about pirate parts, are they just as good?
Steering Racks are not available as a pirate part, are they?

My conquest 180i had a worn steering rack, 200 000kms. Toyota quoted 10k (2001). I got a refurbished one . Drove like new. Was perfect until I sold it at 300 000kms
