I asked Afrihost to change my line speed from 8mb to 10mb. This is what I have been moved to:

DSP Firmware Version E.25.41.55 A
Connected true
Operational Mode G.Dmt
Annex Type AnnexA
Upstream 896000
Downstream 8128000
SNR Margin(Upstream) 5 dB
SNR Margin(Downstream) 10.0 dB
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 15.0 dB
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 34.0 dB

Why am I syncing on G.Dmt if I was previously on ADSL2+ (and at such odd speeds)? My attenuation has gone down, too :O

Any advice?

Try forcing your modem to ADSL2+?

AFAIK, 8mbps is the fastest that G.Dmt supports...

All my settings that I can edit say I am on ADSL2+, but the actual sync is on G.Dmt... it's odd.

@ Nerfherder - I had 10mb sync before Afrihost moved my line over to them. I asked them to change it back, and this is what they have done.

your attenuation looks great by the way

His attenuation isn't that great, 34db, and his SNR margins are bordering on keeping the line synced.

My stats:
ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Link Rate 10015 Kbps 1023 Kbps
Line Attenuation 15.0 dB 11.0 dB
Noise Margin 20.5 dB 7.7 dB

15db attenuation works out to around 1.1Km copper, although Telkom says it's about 700m

34db attenuation is about 2.5Km which would give him a maximum of around 12Mbps on ADSL2+

jackshiels what modem are you using and have you tried any other modems?

Well, it turns out the Afrihost tech support jockey had set my line to 10mb sync with G.Dmt... naturally that didn't work.

I called them and he fixed it by changing the sync modulation on their side - problem solved and back at 10mb :D

Hi There,
Glad you are all sorted out.
A lesson for all of us from your experiences is that it is possible for ISP's to make a mistake and that we should all be prepared to politely call and ask for an explanation if we see something is not right.

Hope your pickup line works.

Regards Tim
