Hey,

Since WA decided to increase their top-ups, I'm having a difficult time deciding if I should stick with them. I currently have their Titan 15GB package for R199, though with top-ups I'd sometimes do up to 30GB per month in total.

I used to spend R199 monthly subs plus anywhere between R135 to R225 on top-ups per month, though now its gonna cost me a fortune to maintain my previous flexibility.

However, the main crux is that I'm on a 10MB line and have become accustomed to those speeds. Therefore going to uncapped 4MB would frustrate me.

Now I noticed that Afrihost has a special running till end of December called "Gold Package", which provides 50GB for R475. What are the chances of them discontinuing this special?

Is their network reliable? Is this package good for gaming, downloading from steam and streaming VOD like youtube? And what would the prices be when the special ends?

Would anyone recommend Afrihost?

I would recommend them.

Their capped bandwidth products have been pretty solid since Seacom sorted out their cable problems. The R475/50GB product is not a special, that is the normal price. If you signed up for that one last month, you would have gotten R100GB for the same price until the end of December.

Update: Just saw the fine print now. It looks like you could still be getting double the bandwidth until the end of the year if you sign up for one of the gold packages.

I've also been researching this, and keep coming back to the 50gig top-up. Have even considered having their 4 meg uncapped for downloading, and then my current capped for gaming.

HAve always had good service with them. Downloads are a bit slower than Telkom but they are ALOT cheaper. Also give u a free gig now!

Hi,

I have a similar issue as your self with the WA recharge increases.
So what I did was kept my WA account because it does perform a bit better than Afrihost in terms of latency and durning office hours.
A got a 1gig free Afrihost account with cheap top-ups when required.
This way if web africa is slow or not working you have a alternate account on a separate ISP - I think Afrihost use IS.

I'll vouch for Afrihost as a capped ISP, love them to bits ( Use them for local gaming now until MWEB signs open peering with SAIX )

I'm on their 15GB capped with my 4mb line and regularly see 450kbps download speed. Great service too!

Hmmm!

Anyway I use them too. good service. plus i got the free 1GB per month thingy.

I have been with AfriHost for some time now and would happily recommend their "wares". ;)

Thanks very much for all your replies!

My main problem is that 15GB @ R199 is a bargain of note and if Afrihost discontinue their 50GB offering in Dec, I don't want to be left high and dry, since I won't be able to keep Titan.

I suppose I should just try out 1GB (once my WA runs out) and go from there.

Are their any 4MB uncapped accounts that can push to 10MB?

shhh, don't tell anyone, but my folks's 4meg uncapped account with afrihost was running faster than 4Mbps (5.5Mbps). They're getting the same speed now on capped, so I can only assume it was their distance from the exchange and not Afrihost limiting them. I imagine it would have run at 10Mbps if the line was high enough quality.

That being said, I think this was an anomaly, and probably wouldn't happen with other peeps. If it is happening with other peeps, I can't imagine it would for much longer after this post (soz guys).

Their capped products are solid and well priced, just don't get uncapped with them.

I have to say that the free 1gb i got from them has excellent speeds

What do you think will happen if we sign up for the Gold package? I mean, will the price increase next year? Or are we guaranteed R475 as long as we dont cancel the contract? For unshaped bandwidth its pretty good.

I think all the Gold packages have the 'double special' on. Can't see the price of R475 increase, but they may well only give you 25GB. But my gut feeling is they will continue with the 25GB+25GB for the same price next year :) well we can only hope...
