Can CAT5 support Gb Ethernet?

According to Wikipedia a normal CAT-5 cable can sustain speeds of 100Mbits, although this can go up to 155Mbits over a short distance.

CAT-5e can support Gigabit Ethernet though.

I run a gbit network on CAT5e, no problem. But like Franna said, if you are laying new cables, then CAT6 may be a better option for the future.
