Can I change my number plate?

My car was recently highjacked, found but they swopped number plates.
I can only assume they kept the old ones - so before they are used in another highjacking and rake up a zillion fines is there any legal way one can register a car again and get new plates?

Yeah, you can go to the nearest licensing department and apply for re-registration of your vehicle. Make sure you take all the paperwork with you: ID, Certificate of Ownership, etc. They will tell you which forms to fill out, but you can have a look at the eNatis website and download the relevant forms from there as well. There's also a FAQ on the site that is sometimes helpful.
