As the title reads. I am battling to get a picture. When I connect my Wii using Composite AV cables (Yellow, White and Read) I can get sound but the picture is black and white and very fuzzy. I have tried this with my DSTV as well and get the same result. Is it not possible to use Component connections on the tv with composite cables?

I have read on other forums that this should be possible and I was able to get this working on a friends tv. I have a LG 42LM5800.

Please could someone help me.

+1 for checking the cables - if it does the same with the Wii and the DSTV decoder, then the cables are probably the problem.

Component cables (Red/Green/Blue) can be used as an interim solution on the composite connectors - I used them on my setup whilst I went looking for decent Composite A/V (Yellow/Red/White) cables.

The cables are working perfectly. I have tried them and they work perfect when plugged into the first component in. I have a feeling there is a problem the second component in as that's when I get the problems.

Are you using a component out on the wii? Or composite out? The two are not compatible, even though the cables are physically the same.

Composite out on the WII will need to go to composite in on the TV.
Component is a completely different protocol, with red, green and blue on different cables.
The yellow cable on your composite plug set is video, red and white are stereo audio.

im not sure what you are trying to do,
1.Do you want to use Composite cables with your component input/output
2.Or do you want to connect your composite to component?

if its just the cables it will work, i'm doing it, it works 100%, if its not working it might be that either one of the input or output ports are faulty

if you want to connect Composite to component or vice versa, you will need a converter, its two different technologies, (component also does not carry audio)

While the cables are the same, composite and component are not compatible with each other. Component out should always go to component in, and composite out always goes to composite in. by the way of you are after video quality component is better.

The sound plays through perfectly. The problem I have is the video is in black and white only.

Then maybe it's a pal vs NTSC problem?

Basically on my tv there is one AV input (for yellow, white and red) and then two sets of component inputs - So I am trying to connect either my wii or dstv to one of the component inputs using composite - does that make more sense?

Not really. Rather refer to RCA cables for the cabling. Composite and component are video formats which use RCA cabling. The AV input you are referring to (yellow, white and red) is composite video (yellow) and stereo audio (red & white). You can use any RCA cable (they're all the same thing even if they have different coloured heads) to connect composite or component video. What is important to know is that they're not interchangeable - ie, composite out has to go to to composite in, and similar for component. You can't connect composite out to component in or visa versa.

Yeah. That is what I am trying to do. I have the RCA cables (yellow, white and red) for both the dstv and wii. I have the dstv connected and picture looks perfect. When I try connect the wii RCA cables into the component input, I get sound but my picture is black and white. The cables are working perfect as I tried the wii in the inputs where the dstv is working and the picture is in full color but the dstv then shows black and white. So it's either something I am doing wrong or the connections are stuffed?

will you read please. You CANNOT connect your wii's composite out into a component in and expect it to work.

Go and buy a component cable for your Wii, problem sorted.

Yep, or if you are on a DSTV Premium package, its well worth upgrading your decoder to a HDPVR. This will connect via HDMI, freeing up the single composite input for the Wii.

Ultimately to get the best picture out of your LG 1080p TV, it would be best to get both, Wii HD component cable & HDPVR.
