Can I have 2 conncurrent Connections?

Hi Guys,

Just a quick question. Im considering upgrading to ADSL. Now I see that ISP's are offering Shaped & Unshaped accounts that you can pay for per gig. People have suggested getting normal shaped for surfing, etc... & unshaped for Gaming. My question is this: Can I connect/login to both at the same time? Say Im downloading a file on my shaped account. While thats going, can I connect to my Unshaped account, and play a game online?

My apologies if this is a stupid question...

no i dont think it will work!

thr router has to be configured with a user name and password of one account.

but if you run the router/modem in bridge u can then make broadband connection for each 1.

but i doubt it will work concurrently with 2 different usernames

Im not sure, but I reckon you would need two ADSL routers, two telephone lines and two PC's or one PC setup with some hectic firewall rules to be able to do this.

Might be wrong though.

Yes, it is very doable.
It has been done by several users, generally for the purpose of one account for local access which users go mad on, and another for international, which is used sparingly.
as someone suggested, 2 pppoe connections from separate pc's connecting to a router is possible (dependant on the router)
otherwise, a linux box can be used
setup pppoe on ethx on machine
open up a new interface on ethx:1, setup pppoe on ethx:1
configure firewall for each
setup routing tables, ie send requests for xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (game server) to ethx:1 and requests for default gw to ethx.

so, yeah, its very possible, but requires a little linux knowledge!

Yes it will work, but you will need an extra PC (linux firewall), one ETHERNET router/modem but 2 accounts. (USB modem wont work)

The setup we currently have (till 11/1 that is):

1. Two ADSL 3G ADSL accounts (one called 'uncapped' and one called 'capped').
2. The (linux) firewall dials into the capped account.
3. Set IE/Firefox/DL software to use the firewall as proxy.
4. Dial on main PC directly into the uncapped account. (Yes you bypass the firewall, you can do this, I do it daily)
5. All other traffic (not going to the proxy/firewall) will go through the uncapped account.
6. Just out of common sense have the windows firewall active as well, as the uncapped dailup will otherwise be unprotected.

In your case you will just replace 'capped' with 'shaped' and 'uncapped' with 'unshaped'.

For the linux firewall you can use an old P3 or similar. It can also double as a little file/backup server. If you need help setting it up, PM me

Note: In this case the name 'linux firewall' is a bit misleading, its just a proxy server really, but it is implemented using firewall software.

Actually just using the Telkom Marconi router in bridge mode will work fine....

You can actually achieve this on a single pc even.

Setup each "broadband" connection in the dial-up config.

connect the unshaped account ... then connect the shaped account. default route will now more than likely be via the shaped account. Add a specific route via the unshaped account to the games server....

I am successfully logged into 2 separate accounts using a single Windows XP machine and a USB modem. It's easy as pie to setup (you can do it in under 5 minutes), and I'll create a separate thread with all the details before the end of the weekend (gotta run now...).

Um - if you're intending to play the games locally, don't bother with the unshaped account, local content is not shaped (SAIX[Teklom/AYCE/WebAfrica...] based account - dunno about IS based accounts).
