Can i have my adsl setup like this

ok, so the router works in bridge mode!

the linux box has 2 ethernet cards, internet on one side, network on the other, running firewall, DHCP , and its a gateway, all pc's on the network will dhcp to this machine and run normally , it does the PPPOE connection!!


then there is the wrt54g connection, it also does a PPPOE connection, no dhcp and all that, as to not get confused with the linux box, now if i setup the latop manually to connect to the wrt54g as shown , then it should route through there , right ????

the thing that worries me is that there is almost a "ring" in my cat5 network, but the one hub is on the "internet" side of the linux box/wrt54g and the other hub is on the actual network side!!! i may also setup the pc's on the other side manually to connect through the wrt54g, depending on what i want the pc's to do!


but can this physical setup work?
 
That ring thing is going to bugger you up completely.

I run this :

ADSL Line coming in to house -> ADSL Modem in Bridge mode.
ADSL Modem -> Ethernet Card 1 on Server.
Ethernet Card 1 on Server -> Server Firewall and Proxy Software.
Server Firewall and Proxy Software -> Ethernet Card 2 on Server.
Ethernet Card 2 on Server -> Switch.
Switch -> Wireless Router that does not DHCP.
Switch -> Other wired computers.

The server also provides DHCP services - for the entire network [including wireless connections].
The ADSL router does nothing but bridge PPOE traffic through it - i.e. it's dumb.
The wireless router also does nothing but authenticate and accept wireless nw traffic - i.e. it's semi-dumb.

Can it work? Yes! (assuming there is only 1 dhcp client as you specified)

Will it be secure? No!

As you said you have a kindof ring topology(well sorta ;) ). Which means the linux box would be secure but the wrt54g is leaving a big wide gaping hole.

What kind of router are you using on the adsl side? (the netgear in bridge mode) because it might not stand up to a proper configured linux box in terms of security but could be sufficient for a home network.

why do you want to complicate life so much?
Unless you want to "hide" the 10.10 etc addresses. Rather kill the link from the 192.168 hub to the wrt54g, as no need
eth0 will be set on 10.10.10.x, i assume and does pppoe
linux can pipe from 192.168.x.x to 10.10.10.x for internet, supply to 192 address. the gateway for the 192.168.0.x should then be 192.168.01. You will also need to configure firewall on linux, etc
The laptop to wrt54g is no problem.

I use a similar layout, which works very well.

Double Beat, Stokes has same setup, secure for the past 18 months

well... i know that the security that the linux box is supplying is almost being bypassed by the wrt54g, but i'm gonna rely on the wrt54g's firewall and hopefully due to the pc's being on different ip networks not comminucating between each other,

i wanan be able to run up with my latop, and either , route the the linux box and use internet (on account 1), or decide to manually set my settings and use internet (on account 2) and dmz all traffic to my latop, as i want all the incoming traffic!
 
ie

normal use.... go through linux box...


special use... go through wrt54g( special use being forwarding ports to my laptop/ using a different ISP account etc etc etc)
 
Setup yer DHCP to assign a different address range for the WIFI computers ...
or - more specific - hard code [in dhcp] the wired computer's ip addresses and link them to the wired pc's mac addresses that run on one subnet.
Then setup a range of ip's for new dhcp requests that run on a different subnet.
Then setup approptiare routing on the server for the 2 different subnets.

i.e. Use subnets to seperate your networks, and use DHCP to assign the subnets appropriately.
