Hi

I have a sata to USB 3.0 cable that I have attached to an SSD to create a simple fast external drive.

It works great. Moves a 1gb file in less than 5 seconds.

I am concerned about keeping the SSD open and naked like this. Is it fine? Do I need to enclose it into something?
Any suggestions.

Hi, I dont see a problem, try not to drop it too often.

BTW, where did you get that cable from?

Fine - increased risk of breaking something near the sata connectors though so don't lend it to idiots.

Duct tape it if you have concerns. There is no reason you would need an enclosure unless you plan to move it around a lot, keep it in a bag with other stuff (even then it's just for keeping the outside looking new).

Wouldn't a 128gb flash drive be a better solution?
Than carrying around a huge ssd drive?

Pop that into your pc and get the flash ;P

If it is big enough I would rather use it for my OS.

Boot to windows in a couple of seconds and resume from hibernation in the blink of an eye.

But if it is a 60GB or thereabout then rather use it the way you are at the moment. Beats the hell out of any flash drive.
Only drawback is it costs 15 times more than a flash drive of the same capacity.

USB flash drives, even USB 3 variety of "good makes", even ones advertised as up to 70MB/sec, tend to do about 35MB/sec. A USB3 connected SSD will do >200MB/sec. I think USB SSDs do exist as well but the usual flash drives are very slow.

Erm. These babies are super fast.
Also flash drives have limited lifespan and higher risk of data loss.
