All my antivirus software is up to date.

i have a day leisure today at work and i want to join 1 of the many cod4 online servers frm work. i have never played online before so im not sure.

Your PC is no more susceptible to hacking when playing online than it is the moment you connect to the internet.

Yeah your chances don't go up when playing online games. Just keep your anti v up to date and maybe have a firewall in place and you will be fine. Don't stress ;)

so is there anyone else who is able to play online like right now??? i think im going to create my own server. :D

I play often, actually way to much.....Yeah you can play now, in 5minutes, in 10 or even the whole day - there are always guys playing :)

It doesn't increase your risk of being hacked, if that's what you mean...

Unless a given game contains an exploit in its netcode, but I don't think that really happens in the real world... I've never heard of it before.

it def can since u exchange data with other players, but if u have the newer anti-virus programs like bitdefender taht won't happen.

Dasher you are incorrect bud, your exchanging data with a server not players as far as i know, meaning everything that happens online goes through the server before reaching you.

I have never in my life heard of anyone's pc being hacked via online games :p

I didn't really think of P2P games in my first post.

Theoretically, P2P games increase your susceptibility to attack as you're handing any prospective attacker your IP and a listen socket on a silver platter.

Still, you give this information to every website you visit and I can't think of any time when someone has been hacked "through" the game. Still, giving someone identifiable information about your connection is not without its risks.

well who hosts the server?

In non-P2P games, its your ISP. Now if you can't trust your ISP, you shouldn't connect to the internet :p

What does it matter? So a hacker gets on your computer then what? Are they going to download state secrets? Going to hack into your banking details?

Sure you get hackers who might simply place a bot on your machine to turn it into a spam zombie, but I really believe you have to be very stupid for that to happen... wait... looks around... oh... right.

Yes you're no more susceptible then when you are online as another wise person said.

A number of years ago, while playing Diablo 2 online... my blizzard account was ghosted and I was booted off the server. While trying to login to my account again, I found that the password had been changed...Game over... I'm not sure if this counts as a 'hack' but I surely felt violated...

Eish... you people...
The other forumite is correct. The server involved acts as the middle point for all the packets exchanged. To be able to hack a person from there, you'd need a means to do it via that server session (not all that easy).
