I have recently had my dsl line installed and have an account with Sybaweb.

I set up the supplied Planet 3100 router as detailed in the manual, with my username and password, etc. DNS now works, it resolves any site I visit. I can go to www.saix.co.za, www.telkom.co.za, www.bbc.co.uk, and a few others, but nothing else. If I try to go to any other site (or use Sybaweb's POP3 server, Sourceforge CVS, etc), the hostnames resolve to IPs, but the IPs cannot be contacted.

Anybody know what could be wrong? I have asked the ISP and Telkom and both say their setup seems fine.

welcome to MyADSL.

the problem appears to be with your ISP (sybaweb).

see if you can ping "any other site":
"Start | Run | ping www.anyothersite.com | OK"

fqdn resolves to an ip, DNS works. if ping works, routing seems ok.

which browser are you using?

try to telnet to port 80 on "any other site":
"Start | Run | telnet www.anyothersite.com 80 | OK"

if you can telnet (get a blank screen) , problem is with your browser.

post results!

As far as I know, those sites you mentioned are the few sites that the Telkom technies have access to when setting up your ADSL.
Are you sure that you have entered the correct user name and pw for your ISP, and not Telkom's test account by accident?

Turns out that the problem was on Telkom's side. They forgot to activate the account after completing the installation. It all seems to work as advertised now.

Thanks to the sybaweb support people for sorting this out for me.
