Can somebody please check my line stats?

Hi Everybody

I currently have a stable 4meg connection, it never loses sync or anything. I have phoned Telkom and they say that I can upgrade to 10meg. Just I don't want to do the upgrade if I have to settle for a line speed of anything less than 7meg.

Judging from the stats below what sort of line speed will I get sync at without disconnections?

The modem is an old Telkom modem, will a new modem give me better stats?

Won't work, your SNR is too low and attenuation too high
 
As your sync is 4 096 your maximum expected data rate would be around 3480, at 10 000 expect around 8 500. This is due to overheads.

Your noise margin, 13 and 12 is a fair but not great. 10 meg should work for you but not much higher.

The specs are your line specs, a new modem will not have any influence. I might report more or in a different format.
 
Heres is my table of comparisons
SNR:

6dB or below is very bad and will experience no synch or intermittent synch problems
7dB-10dB is fair but does not leave much room for variances in conditions
11dB-20dB is good with little or no sync problems
20dB-28dB is excellent
29dB or above is outstanding

Attenuation:

20dB and below is outstanding
20dB-30dB is excellent
30dB-40dB is very good
40dB-50dB is good
50dB-60dB is poor and may experience connectivity issues
60dB or above is bad and will experience connectivity issues

The following guide (distance vs. attenuation vs speed) gives you an guestimate what you can achieve:
<1km should be 23-24Mbit (nice speed, but doesn't it bug you that Telkom people walk through your bedroom?)
1.0km = 13.81dB = 23Mbit
1.5km = 20.7dB = 21Mbit
2.0km = 27.6dB = 18Mbit
2.5km = 34.5dB = 13Mbit
3.0km = 41.4dB = 8Mbit
3.5km = 48.3dB = 6Mbit
4.0km = 56dB = 4Mbit
4.5km = 62.1dB = 3Mbit
5.0km = 69dB = 2Mbit
>5.0km (you are pretty much poked --- sorry for you)

Look at the above. Seems you are fine.
2.5km = 34.5dB = 13Mbit
3.0km = 41.4dB = 8Mbit Touch and go. Looking at those modem results you are 2.5 to 3.0km away from the exchange.
Also depends on the line (copper).
 
Trust me here, with the SNR at 12 it's going to dip much lower when you increase the sync speed, got similar stats at the office and can't stably hold 6mbps, constant disconnects especially during the storm season. Dropped it to 4 and it was fine and stable

round 3 db per 1mbps... and agree with your statement. OP dont even try.
 
New router might give better stats.

PS: Does the old router support ADSL2+?

I wouldn't, the second your SNR drops below 10 I find speeds slow, it drops completely at 6. You'll see it'll be dropping a bit whenever there is a thunderstorm even in its current state, rather leave it if you're happy with it
 
Why not just try it and if it does not work you immediately downgrade it again? That's one way of being certain.

Usually not the case. ADSL2+ at least, is completely happy at 6dB or higher. Below 6dB it starts battling, but a decent modem will hold the sync. Been there...got the t-shirt several times.

Given OP line stats, he would most probably sync at 8Mbps at 6dB SNR and 9dB at 6Mbps.

beg to differ. seen so many site that have 7db on ADSL2+ and experience intermittency.

if OP is willing to experience intermittency then by all means but I wouldnt advise it.

just dont even try upload a lot. line is gonna drop line a bitch.

+1 have also got the shirt, I think attenuation comes into play big time wrt to stability on a line, the lower it is the more stable the line will be at a lower SNR value, I've seen low attenuation lines have stable SNR at 10 and expected speeds, and high attention lines have bad stability and slightly lower than expected speeds

All these cases the stable line at low SNR is with below 30db of Attention
 
Thanks for all the replies guys. I will upgrade the line speed its only R125 extra and see what happens. Hopefully it will have a stable sync at around 7meg.
