Can someone explain NAS servers to me...?

You can also use something like SyncToy to do the backups for users...
 
So where do I buy 20m lengths of Cat5 cable from? I can only find lengths up to 5m, already made-up.

I see that there are companies specialising in rolls of 100m to 300m of cat5 cables but how would I buy the head attachments and is it easy to fit them (from a complete novice's perspective)? I'd really prefer to just buy a couple of 10 metre and 20 metre cables...
 
Pain in the balls making cables,but not particularly difficult

Buy a crimping tool,roll of cat5,rj45 plugs ( and boots if you like )
Strip the cable,align the coloured wires in the correct order,slide into plug and crimp,rinse,repeat
 
Try incredible for 20M. I wouldn't use connectors to join them though - they reduce the signal quality.
 
Get yourself a box of the stuff at Esquire. Its about R450 bucks for 305M. I bought a box like 2 years ago and the stuff never ends.

You can get everything you need there including connectors, crimping tools, wall mount boxes, cheap testing tools, etc.
 
In the reading I've been doing, I should be buying Cat6 cables instead of Cat5 cables as I bought a gigabit switch. As far as I can tell, Cat5 cables are limited in their speed whereas Cat6 cables are trule gigabit capable. Am I reading this incorrectly or do I need Cat6 cables for the D-Link gigabit switch I just bought?

305 metres just seems like a huge waste. I highly doubt I would ever come close to using that much cabling. I guess I'll have to try Incredible for my cables then...

You can get patch cables at Esquire too, its just that Incredible is going to rip you off.

Both are rated for gigabit Ethernet. Cat6 however is rated for higher frequencies (so better interference properties) and Cat6a is double of Cat6 making it suitable for 10 gigabit ethernet. Perform a improper install of Cat6(a) and you negate it's benefits.

So Cat5e, Cat6(a) would all do the job unless you are running in a noisy environment next to power cables etc.
 
Yeah, you don't really NEED Cat6, but if you can spend the money doing it, then its just a better install... and slightly more future proof from interference etc as ponder has said.

As for not needing 305m... I initially thought that as well when I networked parts of my house... now things have moved on and I need more network cable for the HDMI extenders, etc etc... I've burnt through a full roll already and will be needing more soon.

That place in woodmead is pretty reasonable for making up cables. I just can't recall their name, damnit. They do lots of audio and CCTV kit too

Wait! HDMI extenders over network cable? What now?

Okay I just googled HDMI extenders and they sound pretty interesting. Out of interests sake, what do you use them for? DSTV extension I can understand but apart from that I wouldn't really need them I don't think...

Ah, Zakspeed, over the road from the golf store? I've bought CCTV stuff from them before. If Incredible seem unreasonably priced then I'll go that route, thanks...
 
HDMI extenders (at least for me) would be purely to distribute an HD DSTV signal, to say an outside TV....

Make the entertainment area better, watching Rugby outside whilst having a braai.... :)
