Can someone explain Piracy to me?

Hey guys,
obviously i know what Piracy is generally about but i still can't really fathom it?
Everytime i get another movie ,album or application that i have not paid for i still kind of think WTF.

WTF actually allows sites like Piratebay and the thousands of other sites from running so freely. I mean it's insane. Before you know it entire offices have the latest copy of what not and it hasnt even been released in this country?! How are the laws regarding torrent sites and downloading so 'pap'. ofcourse the general price for blu-ray and other multimedia is a bit extreme but what i think is far worse is how you can get anything you want with just a few clicks. I mean let's be honest now, Uncapped internet took SA by mega storm in the last year or 2 so this increases illegal downloading 100000x. Who actually bothers to pay R20 for a dvd movie rental when it can be added to the que and will download in a few hours?! And it's nothing to keep hush about. EVERY single person i know is involved with piracy in some way or another so it's almost impossible to pick on individuals. If it's an mp3 on your phone,a movie,cracked application etc etc etc. So i just can't quite understand why it is so easy? So if someone can please explain to me the ground concept of Piracy and why it is so simple to get whatever you want.

Also do you think they will always find ways to get around the system. Like if all torrents were banned tomorrow.... a new system would start?

well basically its the law of intelectual proerty, i make a song or a movie or a program etc, and i get royalties from ever dvd/cd sale but if you downlaod it from the net you have ripped me off.
with regard to policing it curently privacy laws protect people i mean just becasu i use a torent program does not mean i am downloadign something illegaly there are legal torents.
With regard to sites like piratebay, they are always trying to shut them down but as there servers are located in another country it gets a bit tricky,others clsoe down 1 server and they just get another in anothe country (the same goes for most torent sites), with the advent of the digital music / video player if a cop pulls you off he has no way of checking where you got the music / video you have on your player i mean you can actualy legay download an mp3 or avi file so there goes that. now if you bootleg a dvd/cd and sell it then at least they have some sort of proof that you are pirating (still doesnt stop the okes selling dvd's corner william nicol and highway though)
Good luck banning torents with the net there is always a way around, remember Napster was shut down but that didnt stop anyone from downoaldin,after napster we got limewire and bear share etc (and a bunch of gnutella stuff) then torents and there are still sites that supply mp3's
 
For me pirating falls under "market failure".
I used to pirate pretty much all my games due to the cost. When affordable uncapped came about I started using steam and haven't pirated since. Sadly I may start pirating PC games from EA as a tester before I buy the game, simply put they cannot be trusted, look at what they did to C&C 4.

Piracy in my mind is simply a failure of companies to sell the product people want for the price they are happy to pay. For the first time in history the client has the ability to decide if the product is worth the price requested.

I would say music, movies and TV series piracy is a perfect example of a failed response from media outlets. There is no legal way to obtain TV series and movies digitally in south Africa so we will pirate till there is.

Simply put satisfy demand or we will simply take it. Yes there are ethical sides to this argument that can be made but the majority of people will always choose money over ethics.

Well, certainly in a country like South Africa, where we tend to lag quite a bit behind the countries where series and movies are released, what is to be expected?

Why should some people pay much more than others to get the same content? Why should some people have to wait much longer to get the same content than others? These are the flipside to the coin and
two major driving forces behind piracy.
 
For me piracy is a way to punish the industry. Thats it. Its my vote.
I buy all my games(steam is awesome, same day as release) i watch movies in the cine if they're good.
But if its a freaken Taylor Perry movie with a big black male-woman in it i wont pay thats where i draw the line!
BUT TV shows that's what gets my goat!
No hulu or netflix for everyone else in the world? Cant watch the newest south park or How i met your mother? Okay i'll show you what i'll do you fatf@ks

The game industry i will support, they provide months of gaming at a good price the same day its released. They also have demos. If the industry treats me fairly i treat them fairly

All excellent points on what is wrong with the industry. Yet it is no justification for piracy.
You have no right to those shows, nor does the industry have any responsibility to provide it to you in a specific way or on a specific schedule.

I was not suggesting it was.

Not that I give the slightest toss about piracy.

It's become a war now though, with the powers that be going after people with all their legal might, without a care in the world what damage they might do.

**** 'em I say, they are digging their own graves frankly.

Unfortunately fought by a bunch of self righteous pricks that believes the industry owes them something.

What do you think the effect will be if everyone, instead of pirating, sends an email to the artist/actor/whoever stating that "I will not buy your album/go watch your movie because ..." and then specifying some of the reasons people use as justification for their piracy. Even if just every pirate in South Africa does this the artist/actor will receive 100K (more?) emails every time they bring out an album/movie. 100K voices are hard to ignore, even if it comes from our little country.

Yeah, unlike the industries in question, which are full of warm cuddly humanitarians.

What do you think the effect will be if everyone, instead of pirating, sends an email to the artist/actor/whoever stating that "I will not buy your album/go watch your movie because ..." and then specifying some of the reasons people use as justification for their piracy. Even if just every pirate in South Africa does this the artist/actor will receive 100K (more?) emails every time they bring out an album/movie. 100K voices are hard to ignore, even if it comes from our little country.

You'd think the enormous piracy would have lent these people a clue by now. In any case, you want to find out, start a movement, get people to email actors if it's an important cause to you.

I don't know. I think we are inherently attracted to the idea of getting something for free. Yes, you can intellectualize piracy, we can debate the principles ad nauseam, but in the end there is something fundamentally rewarding/exciting in obtaining value for gratis. It's like being locked up in a sweet store and there is no punitive consequences for helping yourself. Piracy is technology and a lack of consequences. I'm not complaining. :-)
