I had my laptop connected via wifi to a router on an adsl connection downloading at at average speed of 100kB/s.
For the past few days my downloads have dropped to between 1kB/s - 5kB/s.

I initially thought it must be a signal probem and was about to contact Telkom when I decided to first connect a second laptop also via wifi.

The second laptop runs at full speed without disconnecting the first one.

I know now it must be something other than an ISP or router problem, but what could it be?

I even moved both laptops as close to the router as possible but the first one just hangs at these low speeds.

Did the usual restarts and router resetting to no avail.

Any advice will be much apppreciated?

1. Disconnect the connection on the faulty laptop, and connect and enter the key again.
2. Ping your router with the faulty laptop and the working one and see if there is a difference.
Windows+R > ipconfig > look at your default gateway. (10.0.0.1/192.168.1.1/192.168.0.254/whatever it is)
then still in the cmd box type ping xxx.xxx.x.xxx -t replacing the x'es with the relevant ip address.

Post back with more info if the problem persists.

thanks francois.
I decided to plug the router directly into the PC and viola the speeds improved.Im thinking it could be a faulty wifi dongle or the wifi hardware on my PC.
What I find unusual though is that when i plug the dongle back into the PC and disconnect the direct link to the router the speed is stable for about 30 min before dropping dramatically.
It could be that when the wifi mechanisms reach a certain temperature, the speeds drop, although this sounds rather daft.

This PC does work without a dongle although it does have a prescribed wifi button. The other PC I'm using is virtually the same model but engages wifi without the need for a dongle.

Is there a way to test wifi hardware on a PC.Going to try another dongle in the meantime.

My desktop PC actually has this issue. Took a lot of ISP cursing and frustration before I found the problem.
I used an old Canyon PCI WiFi card and after a while (in my case it takes days/hours) the speed also drops like yours does.
Using a cable on a UTP port works fine. I've decided not to waste more time on the issue. I'm guessing it's some kind of Windows 7 driver issue or something. Those Wifi dongles are most of the time also crap.
