After today's load shedding had completed I found that my ping was incredibly high while trying to play Dota 2 on the South African servers.

I took a look at my favourite servers, and found that some servers had a huge ping while the others were completely fine.

The weird thing is, that all of those servers are based in South Africa.

Can anyone explain what is wrong, and whether I should just wait it out for tonight?

Looks like the Cape Town servers are okay, but the JHB ones aren't.

Probably MWEB has a link down somewhere and the traffic is rerouting via their international links to the Cape. We see that on the SANREN network when there are enough links down to split the network and the route to some universities is via Amsterdam.

Thank you for the info. Also to everyone else who gave a meaningful input on this thread. You guys are as awesome and reliable as always.

I experienced it exactly the other way round. Internet was crawling and after staring at the speedtest.net screen for 10 minutes, trying to load the [Begin Test] screen, the best server, based on ping, was Neotel in Jo'burg. I'm located in CPT ffs!!! :wtf:
