Can someone verify my dstv setup?

I currently have a single view setup, one dsd 1110 decoder. I want to enable a second viewing area. I know i need a second dsd 1110 decoder, a dual lnb, a heartbeat link and xtraview enabled at multichoice. So:

1. I replace my single lnb with a dual one, and run a cable to each decoder?
2. Both tv's currently have a plain old aerial cable, coming from a roof mounted aerial (there is a split box in the roof). Can I use this as my heartbeat link? It is a DIY project, so I'm trying to save costs.

I have no plans to buy a PVR in the future, so I don't think I need a multiswitch. It is a 90cm dish.

TIA

1. Correct
2. I think that should work as the heartbeart, if you want to be sure then just eliminate that splitter & join the cables so its directly between the 2 decoders (you shouldn't need an old aerial now anyway)

btw, you might have trouble finding a new 1110 but a 1131 will do even though it looks terrible

Do yourself a favour and download the latest xtraview document off the DSTV website (or the forum, can't remember) It's quite detailed with all the bits you need.

Personally, I would put both decoders in the same location and join them with a short heartbeat cable. You can have your remote eyes service both decoders (just check the above document to be sure).

As a side note, replace all the cable. I'm assuming that the existing installation is rather old? The quality of the cable of a few years ago is nowhere as good as the RG6 you get now. Also, do away with those crappy old connectors and go for F-types throughout, including all the splitters, which needs to be replaced.

I know you want to keep costs down, but if you doing this yourself you'll still get away on the cheap but have perfect images.

When you replace your LNB make sure your twin LNB has the same skew (rotation in the LNB holder) as your old one. If you are missing channels after the switch then your skew is off.

Thanks for the replies, checking the manual now.

I would like to have a decoder per room, as the living room has a 5.1 setup for which i will need the spdif connection, and in the second room there is a stereo hi-fi, so I will need the stereo output from the second decoder.

The dstv install is about a year old, the old aerial install is probably quite old, but this will only be used for the heatbeat, no tv viewing. I will run brand new RG6 from the lnb to the second decoder.

If all else fails, I will need to run a new heartbeat link between the two decoders, but i'm hoping the old cable will work.

P.S, luckily my brother sold me his dsd 1110.
