Can Star Wars-style lightsabers be a reality?

I've never entertained the possibility. Mostly because the weight of the lightsaber makes it unusable as a sword - only the hilt has any weight.

Speaking of weight, a power source to power something like that would be a lot bigger than the hilt.

I haven't seen the scene where the Jedi tows the trailer with the power source behind him as he fights with his light sabre ;).

In an age of intergalactic travel I'm quite sure we'll get the power thing sorted out :). It also assumes the total energy of the lightsaber comes from the power-suppy, but rather there might be an interplay of forces/fields/energy of which the lightsaber is only half of the equation & acting more like an instigator / manipulator.

I was answering on the basis of the question in the OP.

why don’t we have working lightsabers in real life?

A few weeks with Yoda or Darth Vader will sort that out .......
