A friend of mine has the same Jetta than me, and got 4 new tyres. But the old one is still good for at least 15 000 km, maybe even more. My car's tyres can also still go for 15 000 km, so if I take my friend's tyres, and store it for a year when I will need tyres, then put it on my car. But someone told me tyres get "hard" or crack when they are stored. Is it true?

I had new tyres stored for more than a year with no ill effect. Just make sure it's in a dark and cool place. Had mine in cardboard boxes in my laundry. Others might have a different view on this.

As far as I'm aware average tire lifespan in storage is 1 year. It all depends on the compound and storage conditions though.

Think I'll take the chance. Store them and when I need them see how they look.

my father stored his original 4x4 tyres in the garage for just over 2yrs, and put them back on the bakkie with no issues at all...

Leaving them in the same standing position for an extended time period could result in flat spots being created

From what I've seen tires seem to last about 5 to 6 years before the rubber deteriorates and you start seeing small cracks appearing on the sidewalls.
That's when they're not stored in a dark and cool place.
A couple of years won't be a problem.

I've often though of budgeting to buy one tyre every 3 or 4 months so that when you need to replace them you don't have to buy 4 at once.

I had a bakkie that i didnt drive much, after 4 years on the same set of tyres I noticed hairline cracks in the side wall of the tyre. I contacted Continental (They were Conti's) and they sent one of their guys to check them out. It seems that when the tyres were originally put on, they were already "old". There is by law a date stamp on each tyre. The tyre will not be safe to sell if it is 5yrs old. So watch out for those "specials". As far as i know there is no legislation to control any of the sales, so be wary!! Make sure your tyres ar no older than 5 yrs!!!

Makes you wonder why Re-treads are allowed in this country!!!!
