Can you mirror a MS SQL (2008) database on the same server

Can i mirror a database in the same instance if not can i do it between 2 instances or can you only mirror between totally separate servers ?
 
I am pretty sure you can mirror between 2 instances on the same server...

Doubt you can mirror on the same instance though.

thanks, I'm setting up a "Play" environment to try this.

Do you maybe also know why a database goes into Read Only mode when i restore it ?, Ive downladed the Adventureworks2008R2 from microsoft, when i attach it its in readonly mode.

I backed it up and restored it again no differance, I have also tried make it read only with this

ALTER DATABASE sampledb SET READ_WRITE
