Long story short, there's a fire hydrant on the edge of my driveway. If you reverse straight out of the driveway you will hit the hydrant. And lo behold, I've hit it once, and 2 of my visitors have also hit it.

Is it legal to put some kind of cushion on it to prevent damage to cars if anymore people reverse into it?

You could put a tall pole next to it.

I've reversed into short bollards several times, it peeves me no end.

That's actually not a bad idea. Put a plastic pole in front that you hit the plastic pole first.
Now to discover a way to put it so they don't steal the pole.

I put a tyre over the hydrant a while back and it was stolen the same day :'D

Get the Council ( and you will have to pay), to move the hydrant!

One really questions the layout of drive ways that end up opposite these things! Goes all the way back to the developer of an area and his disgusting planning that poles and hydrants end up not at property boundaries.

Did that once at Builders in Clearwater (12 years or so ago). Called Massmart and bitched. They would have none of it. Caught them putting up parking at own risk signs the next day so I took a photo. When I called back, the mention of small claims court changed their mind.

They paid for my new bumper.

Legally you cannot do anything that interferes with the function of the hydrant, or would prevent emergency services from accessing it.

But a plastic pipe before it should help. What about buying some reflective strips or paint and spraying it so it's more clearly visible, especially at night?

Should not be a problem if you just tie a tyre to it without obstructing the actual connection part.

Problem is it's right in the blind spot so you don't see it. I think the pole idea might work. Gonna give that a whirl.
