I would like to give my friend my old pvr but am not sure if it will still be compatible.

Yes, that one works perfectly still. Have one too.

Just needs a smart card and to have it transferred from your name to his.

Perfect. Also will he be able to use the on demand features, DSTV on various devices etc?

That PVR is still fully functional - just transfer it over to the new owner by contacting Multichoice.
