Can you write a file >4GB on a DVD?

can you do it or not?

I just wrote 2 DVDs with backups, archives, which are split to approximatelly fill a single DVD disc, and both are screwed, the file size shows as ~300MB and the files are corrupted.

yes, you can.
i often take a few things, make an iso out of it, then just copy the iso to the dvd (no, i didnt say i burnt/wrote the iso...i just copy it, as one big fat file)

what software are you using to burn it? I use Nero

i got nero 6, because my file is over 2gb in size i have to use udf as the disc type...then just your normal drag and drop and burn

what parameters do you use for the UDF? Physical partition and UDF 1.02?

is there any drawback of using UDF compared to the standard ISO? is the compatibility reasonable, for data?

sorted, the UDF works like a charm with the default settings ...

I am quite disappointed from Nero, how complicated would have been to say

if (fileSize > 4GB) DisplayMessage ("You need to use UDF to write that DVD!");

Err, my Nero does that automatically for any files that are over 2GB...

Try an "official" version of NERO, some of the "other" versions of NERO are known to cause problems

the actual logic that nero uses, and the error message that comes up when trying to make a normal dvd when a single file is bigger than 2gb is
if filesize > 2gb, then display error and prompt user to use udf.

my version came with the dvd writer, maybe the problem is that I don't use the wizard mode but the "advanced" mode, I suppose that they assumed that if you have choosen the advanced mode you know what you doing

Couldn't it be that the media itself is faulty? I've had similar problems for instance writing to TDK, changing to Verbatim solved it.
