Anyone have any tips on cancelling a TV license, been paying it since 2011 without TV... Cancelled DSTV then, LCD doesn't have a working tuner, no TV cables even come into the house anymore.

Early October 2015, I called and notified them, they required a affidavit, I faxed this through.

End of October, I emailed requesting confirmation - no response.

Today I receive a letter giving me notice that they will hand me over if I don't pay.

Call their bluff!

1996 I hired a TV through Teljoy. Had to get a license. Gave TV back. We bought a TV and since the wife was buying it on the day she just got a TV license at HiFi Crap. So I cancel mine and send affidavit and copy of my wife's TV license. All cool. Get lawyers letters 3 years later threatening outstanding amounts. Fax another affidavit and copy of wife's TV license again. Same story again a few years ago. This time I phoned them and they ask for the same documentation. I told them to take me to court because they have no proof I have a TV or not. I get emails of discount offers to settle outstanding amounts occasionally but I ignore it. A lawyer had told me they can't take me to court as for lack of evidence and it would cost to much to prosecute the thousands of defaulters.

Get a old tv, hand it to a tv place, get a letter is gone. Send to sabc, no more tv, no more tv lic.

That's what they said with the affidavit, I went through the effort of getting it stamped, etc...

SABC is a major.pain in the arse.

Just like etolls sabc reminders are recycled or used as braai lighters.

Shame, my colleagues mother died more than 10 years ago, he still gets death threats from those scum collectors and sabc. Completely gave up trying to prove she died, since a death certificate did not work.

You can check out but you can never leave.
Once you have sent them the cancellation request and proof... then you just have to stick to your guns.
They will come after you, and hand you over, but you just have to weather it out.

What TV is that if I may ask?

Samsung Series 7 - never used the TV tuner before, when the rugby was on, decided to try it... and nothing, just static, tried the wired antenna - and a portable one... nothing.

(DSTV was over HDMI)

You don't know how true this is. My bosses Mum died 9 years ago. She is still receiving notices and demands.

They send her death certificate and affidavits every year. I think they will only stop when they produce the body.

I get one for the guy that used to live in the house, sent them back a few times... now I just trash it.

I have only ever seen stories of people not being able to cancel their TV license (even when they are dead).

Has anyone ever successfully canceled one?

Seems like an impossible task :erm:

Before I left I cancelled mine. Took about a month of pestering them but eventually I got a email saying it's been cancelled.

Having said that the poor sod that purchased my house is probably receiving monthly threats.
