cancelling contract - Cell C is useless/ripping me off??

after much fighting i now want to cancel my contract
i have 18 months left of a straight up 100 coupled with a samsung S4 for R399pm

cell C rep quoted me R6300 to cancel

the contact portion costs R100pm

so if i do my math correctly
R399 - R100 = R299pm payment for the handset.
R299 x 18 months = R5382 pay in for the handset.

my question is how on earth are they calculating the extra R1000?
R100 for the contract x 18 months is R1800

so by cancelling early i "save" only R800?? how is R1000 extra deemed fair??

i am happy to pay in for the handset but the extra R1000?? means i am pretty much paying the contract up in full to get out of it and then not getting any service for the payment.
doesn't seem fair at all.

even Vodacoms cancellation terms would leave me better off!!
R399 x 18 months x 75% = R5386.5

Cell C seems determined to destroy their own reputation through poor service.
to date my experience with Cell C has been totally dismal, the pathetic service quality and lack of feedback makes them one of the worst companies i have ever had to deal with. what a complete and utter waste of money.

That amount looks correct TBH

You need to remember that it costs admin to process contracts and cancellations.

If you were to contest this at a tribunal (I don't know where this is) they will side with CellC on this one.

EDIT: You have to pay for the phone, its included in the CPA

The extra R1000 will most likely be from the contract (Strait up 100) cancellation fees, it still has 18 months left, which is a lot.

EDIT2: Assuming your own maths (R299 x 18 months = R5382 pay in for the handset) isnt correct.

How do you know what it costs to buy the S4 for cellc? Remember that to a certain degree, they do subsidises the phone as well, maybe a little less say than vodacom, but it still counts and they will use this against you.

I agree with CellC on this one. I too have a Galaxy S4 with about 17 months to go. I am going to cancel the contract in January. If I cancel now I will have to pay R6000, but in January it will be R5700. The amount decreases by about R300 every month. I think this is very reasonable since MTN charges you for pretty much everything.

I think CellC's way is the best although it is a lot to pay once off. I would also like to know what the extra R1000 is for but I'm not questioning it since I think it is reasonable.

As far as I see it the device costs R299pm and it was worth round about R8000 - R9000 at the beginning of my contract. The price decreases with R300 every month. You had your contract 6 months, thus 6x300= 1800. Say the device was worth about R8500 when you got it, then: 8500-1800= 6700. I'm more than happy with the way they do it.

I sold my Galaxy S4 so now I have the money I need to cancel the contract since I have a lot of issues.

Firstly, Cell C subsidised the cost of the handset so your calculations are irrelevant. Obviously an S4 costs more than R5.3k.

Secondly, the quoted cancellation price is excellent. You're basically just buying a prepaid S4 at a good price.

Thirdly, why did you take out a Cell C contract without testing their network with a prepaid sim card?
