My father died a few weeks ago. He had just been diagnosed with oesophageal cancer. Started chemo. 3 months. Finished chemo. Got an infection. Got septicaemia. Antibiotics ineffective. 3 months after diagnosis he is dead. Indirectly caused by the chemo. He was quite active and healthy (aside from the cancer) before starting treatment. At least he didn't suffer for very long.

That's what i've always said, it's not the cancer that kills, it's the chemo - pure poison but you have to do what you have to do if you want any small chance of survival!!! And I've just finished 18 rounds of chemo:eek:

How does one lessen your chances? It is scary

You have no choice!! Someone once said to me, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was true, that the pharmaceutical companies have probably come up with a cure for cancer but they make so much money on the chemo drugs that they choose to keep quiet. You would think, with modern technology and medicine, there would already be a cure............... Chemo ain't no walk in the park and I don't wish it upon my worst enemy....

It seems to me as soon as the person finds out about the cancer, they deteriorate at an alarming rate

Depends on the type cancer and the treatment. My mom died after 6 year battle with lung cancer, my aunt's dad died within 6 months of being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. I believe the latter is due to the fact that pancreatic cancer takes a long time to surface.

What scares me is it seems to be affecting younger and younger people now.

My gran died from it in 6 months too. 6 doctors missed it.

Biological drugs should become a norm in treatment. I just hope the medical aids pay for it in full and that this disease becomes more of a priority than HIV.

Goodluck! I like to believe everything is beatable.
