We all knew it was coming to this. Humboldt Distillery — which began selling its Humboldt Vodka brand a couple years ago — has released a cannabis-infused vodka called, obviously, "Humboldt's Finest."

Owner Abe Stevens explains in a press release that the vodka — which doesn't have any THC in it, rendering it legal to sell — has an "herbal and aromatic quality reminiscent of fresh cannabis, and we've found it works very well in place of gin, giving classic cocktails a fresh new spin."

The North Coast Journal profiled Stevens and his burgeoning line of spirits several years ago. In the press release, he explains that he couldn't ignore a market demand that called for infusions of Humboldt County's most famous agricultural product. Apparently it's available now, so start looking for it on shelves soon at around $30 a bottle.

The company's press release:

Humboldt Distillery, Humboldt County's first micro-distillery, and producer of award-winning organic vodka and spiced rum, announces the release of HUMBOLDT'S FINEST, a vodka infused with cannabis sativa, now available statewide in California and Colorado.

Humboldt's Finest, one of the first spirits of its kind available to the public, begins with a unique botanical aroma and ends with a smooth finish. With its appealing herbal character, the cannabis infused vodka is ideal as a neutral base for today's innovative, specialty cocktails. Humboldt's Finest is 80-proof (40% alcohol by volume) and available in 750-ml bottles at a suggested retail price of $29.99.

"We've been selling our original Organic Vodka for more than two year now" says Humboldt Distillery owner and head distiller, Abe Stevens. "As the vodka has grown in popularity I've found more and more consumers asking us to add some of the 'local flavor' to our alcohol. That obviously wouldn't be legal for us to do, but I couldn't ignore the consumer demand. My solution was to come up with a compromise that captures a bit of that character without breaking any laws."

Humboldt's Finest uses local and legally grown hemp. Domestic hemp cultivation has only recently been authorized with the passage of the 2014 United States Farm Bill, which distinguishes it from marijuana by requiring a THC content of less than 0.3% on a dry weight basis. The food-grade hemp used for infusion is from some of the very first legally produced hemp crops in the country since prohibition.

"Humboldt's Finest doesn't have the THC that you'd find in marijuana, so it's not going to get anyone in trouble with the law," explains Stevens. "It does, however, retain an herbal and aromatic quality reminiscent of fresh cannabis, and we've found it works very well in place of gin, giving classic cocktails a fresh new spin."

About Humboldt Distillery (www.humboldtdistillery.com): Humboldt Distillery was the first micro-distillery on the North Coast, and the only in the region to produce certified organic spirits. Founded in Fortuna in 2012 by fifth-generation North Coast native Abe Stevens, Humboldt Distillery also produces organic vodka and organic spiced rum. Both are distilled from domestic organic cane sugar and are gluten free. The company will soon release its first batches of organic single malt whiskey and organic aged rum. Humboldt Distillery products are available at the distillery gift shop at 735 10th Street in Fortuna, California, and for sale at liquor retailers throughout California and Colorado. Humboldt Distillery products are distributed by Young's Market Co. in California, and Breakthru Beverage Group in Colorado.

Its kind of simple.

Buy bankie. Weigh it (optional step). Buy decent vodka.

Drink enough vodka to make space for roughly 1:1 ratio between what you bought in grams and vodka in ml (this is a very rough conversion)

Grind bankie. Place in vodka. Wait 3 to 6 weeks.

Strain through coffee filter. Discard the vegetable matter.

Enjoy with a lime and tonic.

Doesnt Thc have to be heated to be activated?

Alcohol-based Cannabis Tincture
The most common cannabis tinctures are alcohol-based. Although a grain alcohol such as Everclear is ideal, it’s perfectly fine to make your tincture with any high-proof alcohol.
Ingredients:
1 ounce of cannabis flower, trim or a combination
1 quart of high-proof alcohol
Materials:
Device to grind the cannabis: coffee grinder, blender or food processor
Cookie sheet
Quart-sized glass mason jar with tight-fitting lid (or two pint-sized glass mason jars with tight-fitting lids)
Bowl large enough to hold alcohol and cannabis
Mesh strainer
Cheesecloth
Small funnel (optional)
Dark colored glass dropper bottles (optional)
Instructions:
  1. Preheat oven to 106 centigrade.
  2. Finely grind your cannabis in a coffee grinder, blender, or food processor.
  3. Spread the cannabis on a cookie sheet and bake for 20-30 minutes to activate the THC. Let cool.
  4. Add cannabis mixture to mason jar(s).
  5. Pour alcohol into mason jar(s) and stir.
  6. Tightly cover jar(s) and shake before setting in a cool, dark spot.
  7. The longer the cannabis-alcohol mixture steeps, the stronger it will get. Mixture should steep for a minimum of 4 hours though some people prefer to leave it for weeks or a month to increase potency. If leaving the mixture for longer than 4 hours, shake the jar(s) at least once a day.
  8. When you feel your tincture is potent enough, line a mesh strainer with cheesecloth. Place the lined strainer over a bowl big enough to hold the tincture. Slowly pour the alcohol and cannabis mixture through the cheesecloth. Gather, twist and squeeze the cheesecloth to release as much liquid as possible. Discard the plant material.
  9. Line the strainer with a fresh piece of cheesecloth and strain again, this time into the clean mason jar(s). Wring cheesecloth to release remaining liquid.
  10. Store your cannabis tincture in a cool, dark place.
  11. If desired, use a funnel to pour the tincture into dark glass dropper bottles for easy storage and dosing.
Glycerin-based Cannabis Tincture
For those of you who prefer a non-alcoholic option, replace the alcohol with food-based glycerin and follow the instructions above.
Non-THC Cannabis Tinctures
For those of you who prefer a non-psychoactive tincture, just omit steps 1 and 3 in the above recipe (don’t heat the cannabis) and follow the rest of the instructions. Non-THC cannabis tinctures can be made with either alcohol or glycerin, depending on your preference.
Potency and Dosage
The strain and quality of the cannabis used to make your tincture, combined with the length of time the tincture steeps, will determine the potency of your medicine. Use your best judgment as to proper dosage. If in doubt, start with a few drops, increasing as appropriate.
