Cannot access VPN with DSL-2750U?

if you have a spare pc lying around you could always install pfsense on it and use that.

I do actually have a spare laptop. But if I connect the laptop to the wifi router via a lan cable for maximum bandwidth, I'd then need to also purchase a USB wifi transmitter so it could send a signal to the Roku, right? My gut feeling is that a USB-connected wifi transmitter that could handle decent bandwidth to support 1080p video streaming to the Roku might be a bit expensive (meaning I'd just be better off investing in a second wifi extender as suggested above instead).

Mikrotik. Just no openvpn support yet, though it is coming.

Well if it doesn't support OpenVPN, what would I use instead to access a VPN? L2TP?

Also, isn't OpenVPN the better option to get on a router that does support it, and is there any affordable router that does already? It's my understanding that routers' firmware upgrades tend to not add much in the way of new functionality, so you're always forced to buy new hardware if you want to get new functionality.

RouterOS v7 will support openvpn. Until then, yes, l2tp

The thing that worries me is I haven't yet seen where on router specs it shows if it supports L2TP. I'd have expected mine to, only to discover it doesn't.

I guess I could scrutinise the user manual of any prospective new router. Or do all Mikrotik routers support L2TP? It really bugs me that some D-Link routers do and some don't. I have a hunch that the modem-equipped ones like mine cannot, because PPPoE (to the ISP) cannot be active at the same time as L2TP (to the VPN). Just a wild guess.

You'll need to go the VPN route with the Roku, though occasionally the DNS services do work but it's hit and miss and you will have to set up a whole slew of static routes. And no, the 2750 won't let you set up a VPN.

I set up the VPN on a spare computer and routed the Roku through that for a time but I'm not that invested in US Netflix.

Do you mind sharing what WiFi transmitter you used for your PC? Was it a card or USB device?

In that case I'd plug the laptop into the router via ethernet and then share the vpn via wifi.

A laptop with built in WiFi can't transmit a WiFi signal, only receive right? So I'll need to buy a WiFi transmitter for it?

No, not right.

Lo and behold, Windows 10 makes it easy to share laptop internet by wifi :)

Now NordVPN - I suspect - is blocking me from passing the internet on, because it won't issue my cellphone with an IP (the error I get when I try to connect to the laptop's hotspot while the laptop itself is connected to NordVPN is 'Failed to get IP'). I recall actually reading something like that, where it's a NordVPN restriction that it won't allow multiple devices to access the same protocol on the same IP, or some such. FML.

Each time I get one step closer, another technical hurdle appears :D I'm gonna see if I can get a trial with another VPN to test this and see if the error persists. Or maybe a piece of LAN cable will help me.

Ok, so here's the solution: https://support.nordvpn.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001457565-Sharing-a-VPN-connection-from-your-PC

Firstly I got a Lan cable between the router and my laptop, and that fixed the 'Can't get IP' problem. THEN I ran into a problem where my cellphone was running directly through the laptop's LAN connection to the router and not via the laptop's connection to NordVPN ... but setting the network sharing on NordVPN's network adapter as shown in the article above did the trick! My phone now thinks it's in the US.
