Hey guys,

So I have spent this evening quite literally tearing my hair out. I recently purchased the TP-MR3420 from Uniterm Direct. I tried setting it up this evening but I cannot login into the web interface because I am not presented with a login dialog box. I just get a page telling me that my username and password are incorrect. I am running Windows 7 X64. I can ping the modem and my IP address is valid. I have tried using both a static and dynamic IP to no avail.

Steps I have taken already:
- I have tried using a different browser. I get the same page in Chrome 13, IE 9 and FF 5. (Having restored IE to default settings as well)
- I have tried using a different PC (although also running W7 X64)
- I have disabled my firewall and quit my AV (Eset Smart Security v5)
- I have done a hard reset on the router
- I have fiddled with proxy settings having tired - no proxy, auto, proxy, no boxes checked
- I have followed the FAQ on the TP site. I have also e-mailed them but I am awaiting a reply.

If anybody else has had a similar problem or knows how I might fix it, please let me know. Your assistance is very much appreciated.

What firmware version is the router running - the latest is v1.110617
How is the router connected to the PC you're trying to access it from - direct cable or wireless?
Are you using the default IP 192.168.1.1 (subnet 255.255.255.0 /gateway 192.168.1.1) to access the router web interface, what user/password are you using (default is admin/admin)?
Try setting your PC IP to 192.168.1.2 (subnet 255.255.255.0 /gateway 192.168.1.1), then try again.

I can't check or update the firmware because I cannot access the web interface. If there is another way to do this, please let me know.

It is via direct cable but I have tried using a cable and wireless.

I am using everything as default. I haven't touched the thing yet. I have done a factory reset as well. I am not using any username and password. That is the crux of my problem, the login box does not pop up. It just automatically takes me to the wrong username/password page.

I have tried your last suggestion already. It still doesn't work. I'm feeling quite expasperated. I got a generic reply not even related to my problem from tech support.

I'd recommend that you connect the PC directly to that router, and make sure that nothing else is connected. Then hard reset the router and try to access the webpage again.

Did the router perhaps come with an installation CD? I know most routers do come with one, and I've never ever used them to configure the router, but perhaps you'll need to use it for this one?

Hey Pada,

There was a CD but all it had on it was the manual. My sister is coming over this afternoon so I'll try her notebook because using my notebook is practically like using the same pc software-wise. Manufacturer has replied suggesting I return it to retailer. Is it possible that the initial firmware install was corrupt?

Ok, so it works perfectly on my sister's notebook using chrome. She's using win 7 x86 though and completely different AV etc. Now to troubleshoot what on earth could be blocking it? It's weird because it's not blocking the connection because I can ping it. Sigh.

That is the crux of my problem, the login box does not pop up. It just automatically takes me to the wrong username/password page.

Per the manual, check/try this if the pop-up username/password box doesn't pop up:
If the above screen does not pop-up, it means that your Web-browser has been set to a proxy. Go to Tools menu>Internet Options>Connections>LAN Settings, in the screen that appears, cancel the Using Proxy checkbox, and click OK to finish it.

It could also be that the previous incorrect password was saved - try clearing all saved passwords in IE, by deleting them in the history section (tools>internet options>browsing history>delete.
Then do a hard reset with the router connected directly to your PC, and try logging into the web interface (192.168.1.1) again using admin/admin.

Based on what you said in the above post, the router seems to be working on your sister's PC, try uninstalling your firewall, AV, etc. (while not connecting the ADSL line) and see what happens. Win 7 64-bit should work fine with this router.

If all else fails, return the router for a swap out. The firmware could have been corrupt, but then I doubt it would allow you in via your sister's PC.

Also have a look at this section in the IP configuration on your PC, and this section on the PC TCP/IP settings.
Also have a look here

Thanks for the help guys. I am a firm believer in RTFM and but try as I may, fiddling with the proxy didn't help one bit.

So I solved it (well, not really). The login box pops up in safe-mode so I will just have to use safe-mode to configure my router from now on. Try as I may, I could not find the culprit which was not allowing the login to pop-up.

It could perhaps be an antivirus/firewall application that is prohibiting you from accessing the login page.

Almost certainly but I uninstalled my AV (and firewall) to no effect. I thought it could perhaps be my download manager trying to grab a link but no luck there either. I'm okay with this workaround. Thanks for the help though.
