Guys, I guess somewhere on the forum there may be a solution, but bear with me. Whatever I try, I cannot get ICS to work.

* Host PC is XP, SP2
* Client PC is Win 2000, SP4
* UTD connected to host via USB
* Host and client to 8 port switch (had crossover cable between the two PCs before. No luck)
* To my mind it is correctly set up. I have followed advice found on this forum, have used Annoyances.org, have used common sense. Nothing works.
* Last ditch effort is to purchase a router, but is this really necessary?
* Have used fixed IP addresses. Nothing. Have used XP's network wizard. Even worse.

Any ideas? If you think you can set it up for me or give assistance / ideas, contact me. 17 years worth of IT experience and I am starting to be really annoyed (with myself).

I've only managed to get ICS working once (only tried a few times).

you have to give the "server" computer a specific IP address (192.168.0.1). enable connection sharing on the connection you would like to share.

the the "slave" computer, set it up to use DHCP.

did you perhaps tweak any services not to start up? make sure!!

if all else fails, install 602 LAN SUITE. free if you have less then 5 users.

Once you have enabled ICS (and the server has the IP of 0.1) you can change the IP at will to whatever you want as the ICS service will carry on working (I think)

One possible problem I can see is using USB on the host machine. ICS with Iburst worked well for me for a long time but via a 2nd ethernet card. Once I got up to 6 PC's on the network, I moved over to a wireless router.

Another possible solution is fixing the IP address of the host machine, and making this IP address the default gateway on the client PC (but the client should still get its own IP address automatically) You must ensure that DHCP is activated on the host machine.

You don't say in your post whether you can share files. Is it just the ICS that is not working?

When trying to use XP wizard, did you copy the XP files to your Win 2000 machine?

Gatecrasher, I tried the second NIC as well previously. No luck. The rest of the network is fine. File sharing and printing are all OK. But you mentioned areas now that demand that I take another look at the setup. By the way, the current XP setup is brand new and the PC is in perfect condition. I also seem to notice that iBurst over USB is slower than over Ethernet and so will be going back to Ethernet in a moment (still downloading 602 LAN Suite as suggested by Andres101). I ditched Ethernet simply because I wanted to eliminate any possible source of irritation.

Server (ICS PC)

1.Enable ICS on Dialup /Broadband Internet Connection. This will forcefully change the IP on your NIC TO 192.168.0.1

Workstation

1. Obtain your IP automatically (dhcp client enabled)
2. Run ipconfig. You should get an IP of 192.168.0.2
3. If you dont run ipconfig /release then ipconfig /renew (Remmember the ICS DHCP server is only active once you Connect to the Internet , so only run ipconfig /release and /renew after the main PC is connected.
4.If this doesnt work then manually put the TCP/IP setting in

ip - 192.168.0.2
netmask - 255.255.255.0
Default gateway - 192.168.0.1
DNS server - 192.168.0.1

Although ive heard ppl having problems setting up ICS in Iburst ive never had problems on ETHERNET or USB.

machine thats directly to internet should have manual ip, for the other doze machines it is best to tell them to get ip from DHCP
