I have tried this now with three types of Nokia cellphone (6230, N80 & N70) using the settings in the sticky, but to no avail.

What happens is the Bluetooth modem starts the process of dialling to the server, it gets to the authentication stage and then just disconnects.

The same setup using MTN works perfectly.

Are there any Mac users out there who have been able to get Virgin GPRS to work using this method (MacIntosh OS X with Bluetooth modem).

MTN fees are killing me!

Look for a place on your computer where you can change the modem initialization string of your bluetooth modem. Change it to the following and then try connecting again:
at+cgdcont=1,"ip","vdata"

Mac Modem Scripts

Hi AmaZulu. PM me your email address and I will send through the modem script for Nokia N70 and the setup to try. JayN

If what JayN suggests doesn't work, just search for "modem initialization string" in Mac OS Help. You should find instructions on how to change the modem initialization string there.

JayN, did you get my PM?

Athlon64, I tried looking for that in the Spotlight, but it returns zero. I did find where OS X keeps all the modem scripts, but looking at the one I am using, I can't see where to change that string.

Have now tried all avenues and all suggestions, but still cannot get it to connect using a Bluetooth cellular modem on my Mac.

Absolutely bizarre because there is no problem using MTN with this method.

MTN: Connecting...Authenticating...Connected!
Virgin: Connecting....Authenticating...Disconnecting.

Internet on my Apple Mac via Virgin Mobile (GPRS)

AmaZulu, same problem here. Vodacom GPRS connection works just fine, but not the Virgin Mobile one.
But I found a solution at: http://frank.geekheim.de/?p=117
Follow the instructions on the web page carefully.
Download your cellphone script (mine is a Nokia 9500), I think most Nokia phone scripts are the same, and copy it to the specified folder.
Re-pair (Bluetooth) your phone with your Mac, and in the setup select "Nokia CID=1" instead of "Nokia Infrared".
Telephone number: vdata
That's it, working for me. Hope it works for you aswell.

IT'S WORKING!!!!!!!

Thank you! Thank you!!!!! x 1000!!!

Me so happy me do dance of joy, right now!

If you're ever in durban drop me a PM and I WILL buy you lunch for this help. I'm about to save a fortune!

Strange that, I just connected my N70 via bluetooth (with Virgin sim) and it worked on my new macbook.
Could it be that on the N70 under >settings>connection>Packet data>access point I specified vdata so it was maybe not necessary to specify a modem string
