Cannot Sign In To MSN/Windows Messenger

Hi all....trying to troubleshoot for a friend of mine. They had issues with their iBurst connection. I told them it was a messed up modem, which was confirmed when they went to HiFi Corp to get a replacement. Now they got a new one and are connected without issue.

However Messenger is still a problem - tried both MSN (7.5) and Windows Messenger. It tries to sign in and then comes back with either a "Network Unavailable" or "Invalid Password" type error. I thought they just forgot their password, but while I talked to them I tried at home (I am also on iBurst) with their details and it signed in without issue! They can browse the net, download emails etc. just MSN and also Skype cannot sign in.

Tried everything - Windows Firewall on and off; Norton Internet Security on and off etc. Any ideas what it could be?

Hmm, I have had many a problems with Norton Internet Security suite ... in the end I 'gave it back', and they refunded me online and I got NAV only. Now I have no problems - even when Norton Internet security was off, I had problems. Try to get Windows Live Messenger, as it does proper network troubleshooting if you cannot connect. Also make sure IE's proxy string is empty

sounds like a firewall issue.

are you guys in the same area? Using the same tower?

They stay about 7-8 minutes away but do not think it is the same tower - I am very close to Linksfield, they are further away so probably use an alternate one.

IE's proxy is clear. Will try again NIS - maybe they did just disable it instead of a proper uninstall (including the Symantec Removal Tool).

I'd keep away from NIS altogether - I found it was slowing my wife's laptop down tremendously. Just be sure to replace it with something else that works.

Yup....I was pissed off last night when I went to their house only to find NIS was NOT uninstalled, as I had asked numerous times and they had "confirmed". It was simply disabled, which in the world of Norton means fark-all.

I proceeded to remove NIS (with the Symantec removal tools of course so as to clean any trace of the hideous beast in the system)....rebooted....and whadayaknow, MSN works like a charm!

I have problems with MSN too (also on Iburst) but more often when i'm capped, I just go troubleshoot & let it do its little test thing & it normally says there is a problem with key ports, I say repair & then it signs in...
