Canon 20D owners?

What methods are you using? There are loads of different ones that I've come across that seem to produce different results - practice makes perfect. :)
 
The various sliders under the Exposure and Highlights&Shadows tools. My PP is by no means perfect, but for the life of me, I can not get anywhere close to a reasonable compromise between exposure and detail.

Cloud cover is particularly problematic (and this is where film seems to have a clear advantage). If you're interested I can share a raw file of an example of this.

I'm as happy as a pig in mud with my 40D. But there's *one* thing that would make me drop £1000 on the next body right now - if it had better dynamic range. I'm really getting sick of losing all detail in overcast skies for the sake of exposing the rest of the picture properly.

HDR is your friend. Try this tut on Dgrin. I've modified it for Paintshop Pro (actually much easier than in Photoshop).

Here is a pic taken with 40d and Sigma 10-20 using one image exposing for the sky and one for the veld. From a single picture with the exposure adjusments on the original done in DPP:
