Hey guys,

I need some help with my wife's 350D and her CR2 files. When we copy the CR2 files over to her laptop and open them with Photoshop CS3 or Paint Shop Pro Photo X2, the files are only being picked up as 1.57MP photos. When we use L+RAW to capture, the JPG are fine at 8MP but the CR2 files keep getting recognized as 1.57MP. Even when I just view the files in Irfanview the CR2 files are 1536 x 1024 against the JPG’s 3456 x 2304.

I’ve installed the Canon RAW Codec 1.2 to see if it makes any difference, but nothing changed. Photoshop can’t even pick up the dimensions when I try to view them using File>File Info and then Camera Data 2, but JPGs displays perfectly.

Can anybody shed any light on this problem and how to get XP to recognize the RAW files as 8MP?

Just tried it on my pc and does the same. The firmware is 1.0.3 on the 350D and is the latest available. I just can’t understand why the CR2 and JPG are being recognised as different MPs.

I don't know how people get XP to do anything, but the 1.5MP sounds kinda like the embedded preview in the file. Or sRAW maybe?

I think koffie is right, that size is about right for the embedded jpeg. BTW, I wouldn't use PSP X2 to try and decode the RAW files (its algorithms are horrible) - rather use Canon's DPP. If you're using Photoshop, make sure you have ACR (Adobe Camera RAW) installed for the RAW conversion.

You can also use XnView or FastStone to view the RAW files. FastStone also views the embedded jpeg, but you can force it to decode the RAW by pressing A.

I don't know how to check this though. I've just noticed that when I import photos into Aperture, and I view one in preview mode before it has had a chance to generate its own preview (I have it set to generate full size), the preview I get is what looks like around this size.

What size are your CR2 files? Should be in 6-10MB range I imagine.

Thanks for the advice guys. Jip, the sizes are 7-10MB, the JPGs about a ¼ of the RAW’s size. Will try Adobe Camera RAW and Canon's DPP tomorrow (XnView and FastStone also), we where in the KNP bush the whole day since dawn and I’m too tired to try anything now. The wife likes X2, I prefer Photoshop, but at the moment I’m just looking for something to work correctly with the CR2 files :D
