I have a good condition, hardly used flash (430 EX) for use on a Canon 70D. I was wondering whether the 430 EX II is a substantial improvement on the original, and whether it is worth buying the newer model or just sticking with the older one? Is the benefit worth the price of replacing the old flash? If so, how much could I expect to get for the old 430EX?

I have shot many weddings and events with both, and in my opinion, no noticeable difference in performance/quality/ease of use. My advice, not worth spending any money to upgrade to the EX II. Rather save up for a 580EX II or 600 EX-RT, that is of course if their extra features are needed for your photography.

The biggest benefit might be derived from having two flashes instead of the one.

Thanks for the responses, much appreciated. It's a relief that I can use the existing flash and rather spend on other gear.
