Afternoon guys. Some advice please. Incredible connections have a special on a Canon 500D with 18 - 55, and a 75 - 300 lenses, plus card reader and 8GB extreme SD card on special for R5999-00. Cant find link to special, have pamphlet only. I have taken a keen interest to photography, and currently use a Panasonic Lumix FZ38 which I would sell to offset the canon price a bit. Do you guys think its a worthy enough upgrade to go for, and is that IC price for the canon a good deal??

Please advise. Camera mainly be used for scenic panoramic, and off-road 4x4 action events.

Just so you know, the 500D is now two generations behind the current model (550D then 600D). The 18-55 lens is ok but the 75-300 is considered a real dog. Perhaps you should rather think about a 550D body only and then save up or chip in for a better lens. You mention 4x4 action events so maybe a faster lens to stop action.

For example the EF-S 60mm f/2.8 macro will be fast enough for the action shots, take great portraits and some cool close up shots. Or alternately the 28 f/1.8 will be wide enough for the landscape photos you want and again fast enough for action shots.

Thank you kind Sir....I guess all looks good an paper, until someone points out the flaws. Cheers for that :)

Only special from Dion Wired I see on the 7D is body only for R14,999.

Weirdly, DW think that a 7D is R32k coz they say at their price you save R17k :p

And their "normal" 60D price works out to R20998!

Compared to the Lumix - definitely.

The system is considerably better than what you're currently using but the lenses themselves aren't all that great. However if you consider that the 500D, which isn't a bad camera, with the 18-55mm alone goes for the same amount at SACamera.co.za then it's not too bad. In all honesty it will be quite some time before you're frustrated with the limitations of the lenses. In the meantime you could pick up a couple inexpensive primes.

I have the 550D. Pretty nice, but not for video, unless you willing to spend a ton on a special lens that can actually focus in video mode.

I also really get pissed that it has Auto ISO in full auto mode. You think you taking a decent shot, but when you put it on the PC it is really grainy

Not to be funny but I never use Full Auto mode. With all the other setting u can use Full Auto is looking for trouble if you ask me. (not that u did, lol) Normally use Av mode and play from there.

Maybe it's time to move away from full auto and take advantage of some of the versatility your camera offers. You don't necessarily have to start shooting RAW - no sense in over filling your plate just yet - but at least get to grips with the basics. :)

but bwana, you said RAW is better ;)
It may well be for a lot of things but it involves learning a whole new skill set on top of figuring out how the camera works. :)

That said 90% of what I'm shooting these days is done in JPG. :)

:) I'm tempted to go back to JPG (for better burst speed) but the fun of "developing" my photo's in Light Room is just too much of a draw card :)

It depends on what I'm doing but for work jpg is just too fast to turn my nose up at, not only FPS faster but getting it onto then off of the computer. Often I'll shoot JPG to SD and RAW to CF (my CF reader is a FW800 UDMA reader) and then quickly import the RAW in behind the JPG, which has little/no effect on CPU but the file is there if I need it.

Sell your DSLR if you're shooting in full auto - /facedesk.
