Hi guys,

Father in-law want to sell me his camera as above. I'm interested as it would be for my daughter who likes photography. Comes with lenses and Memory cards and the like. I tried to find a price for this online but no success.

R 2 500 a good price for it?

Which lenses?

That's not too bad a price - I recently sold a 650D for R5.5 with the kit lens only - the 500D camera is a couple of generations old (3 or 4) but if he has decent lenses then it could be worth it.

Yeah, but offer him R2k... it's for his grand-daughter, isnt it?

True.

Thanks guys. I was planning on buying one off Takealot for about R 5k. I think this will work for her to see if she's really interested or not. Was just not to sure about the price. Appreciate the feedback :)

*As for the lenses, I don't have the faintest idea. Will update this post when it arrives.

It's a decent place to start. No point throwing vast amounts of money at a hobby that might not stick.

500D with more than 1 lens at R2.5K is a bargain.

I know he has a few. He used it for work (Building assessor) and has quite a few lenses and things.

He bought a new one, and said he's giving the lenses too. Now whether it's interchangeable with his new one and he only giving us the lenses he doesn't use or all because it doesn't work on his new one I don't know. Will see when it arrives. I need to have it couriered from his place. So will probably have it in a week or so.

Good price, won't get many similar offers. Rather spend less than a lot to only find out the camera won't be used, but the camera is enough for a beginner.

I have one and not planning to upgrade soon.... I did a Matric farewell a few months back. The girl's partner also hired a photographer. He had the most expensive gear that I could only dream off :( and felt really intermediated. A few days later I saw the pictures and they were horrid!. He clearly didn't not know what he was doing.

Don't worry about getting the latest and greatest. Knowing your gear is what counts. 2 years later and still learning everyday...

Pitbull , that's a decent piece of kit. As with all things tech-related , a newer model Camera does not make the older one redundant or useless. Upon it's launch it was the best thing to have in the bag.
Let her get hold of a 50mm prime [ Canon's Nifty Fifty aka Fantastic Plastic ] That's the EF 50mm F1.8
Next up is a 100/105mm F 2.8 Macro lens , not one of those semi-macro things like the Sigma 75-300 DG APO el cheapo . It's not all bad if used as a telephoto but you need to know the limitations of it to get good results with it.
Best option there is a Canon 75-300 zoomer , even if it's the ****tiest lens out of the Canon stale.Use it in AV mode , ISO 800 and F8 and it gives good results.

Don't you think it's a bit early to be making lens choices? He hasn't said where her photographic interests lie and he doesn't know what lenses he's getting with the camera. Plus everything you've suggested is telephoto lens on that body...

Ok the camera has arrived at long last.

The lenses in the box are an EOS 18-55mm and an EF-S 18-200mm. No idea what it's used for? Any advice I can pass on to my daughter?

Nothing spectacular about either lens but they're more than good enough for a beginner.

Cool, just posted it as someone asked about it because of the price. I guess it was a good deal

There's so much information on the net, but perhaps the most important thing to learn is the "exposure triangle".

https://fstoppers.com/education/exp...ure-shutter-speed-and-iso-work-together-72878

Canon have this nifty simulator site to explain the concepts of exposure, too:

http://www.canonoutsideofauto.ca/

And then just take a lot of photos.

Thank you I'll read and see what I can instill onto her :o
