I know I could Google or read the manual - but somewhe around Jamestown with very little signal and taking me ages to search :/

How do I activate the flash when on manual?
Also, on compacts they have a 'night' mode where they have a long shutter and a (rear curtain) flash. How do I set the same thing on an SLR?

Thanks

Activate the flash? Just press the little round button forward of the EOS 7D logo (marked with the flash symbol) and it pops up.

There is a flash menu (first menu at the bottom), go down to Built in flash function setting and change the Shutter sync to 2nd curtain.

BTW - why dont you put your camera manual onto your iPad? ;)

Thanks bwana ...

I had EDGE most the way and could hardly search for anything! But I'm home in an hour to check the manual.

No idea why I missed that button! My SX1 was on the side and I assumed it'd be the same place and never checked.

It seems to can't do 1st/2nd curtain with the built in Flash and you need external? Is that basically what a compact night shot is? 2nd curtain?

Just what I wanted to say.... "push the button" :p

You can. Just make sure you don't have anything like Wireless enabled.
