Canon EF 35mm f/2

Not from my side - what would you need this lens for specifically?

I am considering replacing the standard lens on my 300 with either the Sigma 28-70mm f2.8-4 HSZ or the Tamron AF 28-80mm F3.5-5.6 Aspherical

Since you seem to be 'into' photography, what are your views. I know there are better lenses available but all I am looking for is a better than 'point and shoot' option.

General wide angle - this is similar to what the 50mm give you on a 35mm film camera. IOW a view similar to what the eye sees.

Both would seem adequate as long as your expectations arent too high.

Getting a bit perturbed by sacamera's pricing though. The lens I'm looking at is under r2000 including shipping from B&H Photo and over r3500 from SA Camera! :eek: Over r1500 extra so I can support a SA business? Heck no.
 
Camera and camera products are really expensive in SA. I just bought a Fuji Finepix S9600 For R6000, and my little brother in the USA can get it for under R3500 ($449). Import duties are so high on those products.

Well we'll see how high those import duties are - surely they cant be r1500.

How would they compare to the standard Canon 18-55 lens kit of the Digital Rebel series. I'm new to this and want a lens to 'walk around' with that has a slightly larger zoom than the standard Rebel lens kit - I also have a 70 to 300 Tamron for longer zooms but its a bit bulky to go hiking with.

Couldnt really tell you - that sigma does seem like it would be nice in low light though.

Have you managed to dig up any reviews on them? Even user reviews at amazon can be pretty useful.

Yes, thanks have found some reviews since my last post - the Tamron is a no,no - the Sigma seems to be OK though. Will see if I can get it in town else its SA Camera - price is about R200 more locally (including postage ) than o/seas (inc shipping and excl customs if any )
 
How about a prime like the Canon 50mm f/1.8? Tha'ts on my camera 75% of the time these days.

Looks like a nice lens that but I 'need' a bit of zoom to frame pics better.... to used to it I suppose.

Its an awesome lens and it comes with a mark 1 zoom.

I wonder why the prices are so varied - the canon lens I want has been marked up so much more.
 
..my reasoning is that SACamera import their own stuff that they cannot get locally but certain Canon products are sourced locally hence the premium pricing.

So the stuff sourced locally, from Canon SA, is more expensive? Why dont they just import everything then?

LOL - I am just assuming, maybe its the other way round - i know my local photographic store 'warned' me against them as they import 'grey' products - I told them so f#%$# what!! If they cheaper, they get my $$'s... they were not impressed...

I would enquire as to why grey importing should be considered as being any worse than price gouging.
 
As far as I am aware SAcamera doesn't sell grey products... other than some speciality items I 'spose.

Bwana, I'd take it up with Canon SA if I was you.
