Canon EOS 1100D

Perhaps this http://www.makro.co.za/p/52727/canon-1100d-twin-lens-bundle/
Gives you another lens + memory card + bag, for a grand more. (They don't mention the details of the lenses though)

Personally, I prefer the D3100 over the 1100D http://snapsort.com/compare/Canon-1100D-vs-Nikon_D3100
( but then again, I am a bit of a Nikon fan :) )

Either way you won't go wrong with Canon or Nikon. I suggest you get to a shop and feel both in your hands first.

Good advice. Go in and hold both cameras.

BTW they do say what lenses - Canon 1100D 300mm camera, 18-55mm lens, 75-300mm lens, 4GB card and bag.

I meant, they don't mention whether it's IS on non-IS lenses. Don't really know the canon lenses, so perhaps there is only one type.

They discontinued the non-IS 18-55 a few years back so I'm fairly confident its the IS version on offer. The 75-300mm lens is non-IS iirc and a pretty unimpressive lens by most accounts.

Hi guys, thinking of grabbing this:

http://www.sacamera.co.za/product/1021894/Canon_EOS_1100D_&_1855_IS_II_Lens_Kit/

Can I do better than that for the price range? R5k is kinda the maximum, could possibly push a little more. There are a few starter kits for this model, with various lenses. I've read the IS II lens is superior to the DC lens.

If you decide on Canon, and can pony up another R2,000 this is a fantastic deal -

CANON - EOS 550D TRIPLE LENS

And will probably save you money in the medium to long-term...

Great deal - if the OP can stretch his budget that far.

Know the feeling...you start with a budget, do some research...and the $$$ just become more and more. :D

OP, of course completely up to you, but it should take much longer to outgrow a 550D than a 1100D. And it is only a matter of time before you'll want to buy a prime or zoom lens. The 50 1.8 and 55-250 probably retails for R3k so effectively you're getting a 550D for R4k.

Good luck with your decision!

The DC lenses are still available it seems, I just got given a quote on various 1100D kits.

I'll read up on the two (IS vs DC) and decide. Might still consider the Nikon.

Thanks!

Yep - that's why my camera equipment is worth more than my car. :(

DC lenses?

DC lenses?
ie:

CAMCAEOS1100TLBDC

Canon EOS 1100D Twin Lens Bundle (DC Lens)
EOS 1100D 18-55 DC lens, 75-300mm DC lens,

Edit: Okay, I did more homework, the "DC" lenses are to be avoided, no image stabiliser and the IS II has updated optics. It also sounds more hip!

I'm busy 'building' a bundle (EOS 1100D, 16gb, bag) and going to compare with other kits and the Nikon.

FWIW, reason for the camera purchase is so the missus and I have a 'family camera' - I used to shoot a lot in manual mode on my old crappy Powershot A95 and I'm wanting more room to play and experiment/grow but still want a half decent camera for holiday photos and events, but I don't need anything hardcore. I think for the price, the 1100D (and possibly the Nikon 3100) is as good as I'm gonna get but perfectly suited for the task. I can always purchase lenses later on.. or raid Bwana's stash :D

The reason I asked about "DC" lenses is, afaik, in canonspeak it means absolutely nothing.

There are two main types of canon lenses. EF and EF-S. EF lenses are designed for full frame cameras but fit on either full frame (5D, 1Dx) or crop sensor bodies. EF-S lenses on the other hand are designed solely for crop bodies (such as the 1100D, 550D, 60D, and 7D).

EF and EF-S lenses can either have IS or not.

Thanks for the heads up. It's hard to find *exactly* which lens some deals come with, when phoning around the chaps don't know either. Perhaps I should give Canon a call.

To the OP, unless you have moffie hands the 1100D is a pretty small camera so just take that into account.

My advice is to get a better camera from the word go. The 1100D cannot take a battery grip and the shutter fps is dog slow on hi-speed one shot. I would either look at that 550D bundle or just get a new body on its own and then save up for lenses (the most frustrating and boring option but ultimately the best one).

Are all the third party ones being offered by various manufacturers scams?

No not at all. I bought a Phottix grip for my 60D and whilst it's not 100% the same (blue button colour slightly different and difference in texture barely noticeable), it works just perfectly.

Saved me a Grand.
