The sensor has been that size since at least the 8mp 350D.

My understanding of what they say is that the greater the pixel density on a sensor means more noise occurs.

I'm not an expert on electronics or physics, but I can sort of understand this, where you could have a 'crossover interference' (change in the voltage) effect of the pixels due to their close proximity. Hence the electronics (including the physical characteristics which have a bearing on the electronics) has to have better tolerances/accuracy.

Any other explanations of having a higher pixel density I don't quite understand (or doesn't make sense to me)
 
Ah... see I'm vaguely new to this whole thing.... Didn't realise the sensor had been that size since way back when....
 
It's all to do with SNR - signal to noise ratio. Some noise can be filtered out electronically, i.e. not in software and without any detrimental effect on the signal. This is why I see less noise in the raw files from the 40D than from the 30D.

There are two factors that play a role. One is with higher ISO. To get higher ISO on a sensor (which is an analogue device), you amplify the signal. Unfortunately this means you amplify the noise too.

The other issue is with higher resolution. The SNR becomes problematic because there is simply less signal per pixel to work with.
 
The Canon T1i (also called the 500D) is available at R9750. It is more an upgrade of the 450D or XSi

Along those lines I've got a Acer Aspire One in my bag that will also let me edit (in a pinch).

My next [-]camera[/-] dSLR is going to be a 1DMk3 or 5DMk2 - the XXD's have little to offer me.
 
I have no more spare body parts to sell, 1DMk3 would also be my first choice, but budget forces me to do a reality check every once in a while hehe.

Move 350D --> 40D for me is financialy the best option at this juncture, better af and a faster shutter and fps.
I still do not use the 350 to it's full potential I am sure.
I'm gonna rent a Mk3 in the very near future, just to tease myself.

There's talk of a rental place opening up in PE . . one of these days. :rolleyes:

I like the idea of full frame 5DMk2 a lot but the speed of the 1DMk3 is more appealing at this juncture. I've got two 400Ds to wear out first though. :o

Me too. I'd like the 50D even more, especially after playing with it again this weekend.

I damn near bought a 450D this weekend - "just for now" - but as I pulled the test SD card out of it, I realised that the CF cards I own make up the difference in price between it and the 40D.

Yeah - I've got to buy cards for my new P&S - is there a significant difference between SD / SDHC?

EDIT - never mind - wikipedia explained it all to me :)

As far as I know some older cameras cannot handle the SDHC. Kinda like single and double density floppies, back in the day :)
